32X P-47D New Wheels & Tires

Post by ostketten » Sun Apr 11, 2010 6:11 am

Replaced the toyish looking "dish" type stock wheels/tires on the 32X Jug with these wide diamond tread pattern 6 spoke resin tires & wheels. The new wheels are rock solid on the landing gear strut too, with no wobble or play, and that's an improvement over the stock wheels, which had quite a bit of slop in them. I'm very happy with how these turned out, and I think they look much better than the stock wheels. The last pic is a stock wheel shown for comparison. Click thumbnails to enlarge..

Those look great!

Can you still retract the landing gear
OR
Is that not an option since the tires are fatter?

You can still retract the gear, however, the wheel well is not quite deep enough to accomodate the fatter tire, so it does not close up completely. The wheels don't roll any more either, they are permanently fixed in position, but neither one of these issues is any big deal to me, as I don't display these planes gear up, and I don't really care if the wheels roll or not. This project was kind of a learning experience for me, I've ordered several more sets of the wheels, and the next versions I do will be completely interchangeable with the stock wheels, ie. it will be possible to quickly and easily switch between the stock wheels and the customs without fear of breaking anything. 8)
