Panzer IV Afrika Korps?
I've decided, to paint one of my Panzer IVs in a DAK paint scheme. Which Panzer was more common, in North Africa, the Short Barrel, or Long? I thought I read somewhere, that there were no longe barreled Panzer IVs in North Africa, is this true?
Any ref material would also be very helpful.
Thanks

There would need to be some modifications to the rear muffler, gun mantlet, gun barrel, front glacis, and the turret sides to make the 21c Panzer IV H look something more like a an F or G model. Nevertheless, you can still make a decent-looking and passable DAK Panzer IV using the 21c vehicle.
A couple years ago, I got a hold of an RC Panzer IVH while they were still cheap, removed the turret schurtzen, made some other small modifications, and painted it in DAK colors.

The photo was taken shortly after I finished the model. It has since been updated with more pronounced weathering to give it a more "beat up" look. My model is not completely accurate and is still clearly an H model, but the vehicle still looks the part of a "long barreled" Panzer IV late in the North African campaign... and its RC!

short muzzle brake, different iddler wheel, turret side door was in one piece, not two, commander cuppola hatch was in two piece. these are the major and visible differences.Fritzkrieg wrote:What were the major differences form the H and earlier models? If it is just the extra side armor, That can be removed pretty easily.

Heng Long makes a Panzer IV F2 with the long barrel & short muzzle brake.....Panzer IV in Afrika Korps were ausf. E or ausf. F and F2 (with long barel and short muzzle brake).

The F2/G version had the 75mm L43 gun with a very short round muzzle break. I have seen some photos of F2/G model with the single commanders hatch, two piece side hatch and the late style idler. You can make the H modle with 75m L48 into a G or F2 by removing the skirt and turret armour and brackets, cutting down the barrel lengh and making a diferent muzzlebreak. for it

I think it turned out real nice T, and any differences between it and an F or G model certainly aren't worth getting worked up about.A couple years ago, I got a hold of an RC Panzer IVH while they were still cheap, removed the turret schurtzen, made some other small modifications, and painted it in DAK colors.
