Decals for 1:32 Axis planes

Post by ostketten » Sat Feb 27, 2010 6:41 am

I am considering buying some "non-politically correct" decals for my growing hoard of German 1:32 aircraft, has anybody used these...??

I would like to hear some opinions and/or recommendations on aftermarket decals for 32X German planes, thanks. 8)

I haven't used this particular set, but I have used 21st decals on my 1/18 stuff and found the decals to be very good in quality. This set looks like it would be a great solution to adding the swazi to many of the 32x planes and I don't think you'll find anything similar any cheaper. I would probably buy some, but I already have a couple of sheets of Techmod swastikas that I paid $15 each for. For this price, I would recommend getting a couple of them.

I got a couple sheets of those from my local HobbyTown. That price is what I paid, and from reading some reviews of the kits 21st put out, the decals are good quality so enjoy.

I need to get another sheet myself, as I now have more planes than decals. You can never have too many swastikas  .

That is a good price. So these are 2 part decals?
The white and black parts of the swastika's are put on seperately?

That is the same sheet as sold by Badcat, for most 1/32 21st Century planes Me 109s, Me 262s etc. It also has a set of AVG Flying Tigers Chinese insignia and U.S. kill markings/flags (Japanese and German) Good sheet and well worth the price.

Anybody care to share some tips/suggestions for applying them..?? Particularly I would be interested to know what you guys use to flatten the glossy sheen after the decals are applied. Thanks. 8)

This is where the tricky part comes in.
Typically, when I apply decals, I apply a shiny coat of future so the decals won't "silver" when they dry. I use micro-sol on the decals so that they melt onto the surface and when that is set, I overcoat them with another coat of Future to seal them in. When the Future cures, then I spray on a coat of Testors dullcoat lacquer.
The only problem with this prcedure is that you are not decalling an entire plane, just the tail. Sometimes Future has a tendancy to darken the color of the paint so you might have a mis-match of paint.
I'll be honest, if I am just adding a swastika, I don't do anything other than apply micro-sol so that the finish doesn't get messed with. The swatika is applied and works for me at the moment, but I don't know if tey will dry out and fall off in the long run but it hasn't happened yet.

Hope this helps.
Harry

OK Harry, thanks for the info. The only thing I would add to your recipe is I've read that some people spray Dullcote over it after the micro-sol dries. Any thoughts on that..??

Don't know about that. you could probably use Tamiya clear flat or something like that, but I would stay away from the Flat Lacquer.
Also, if you have a broken plane, it might be adviseable to practice with some decals you are not using just in case.
