I really don't care much about the pilots since I display my planes without them. I am more concern about the overall quality of the F-14 model.
Fred, really looking forward to the JSI 1/18th scale Grumman F-14 Tomcat.

CORNBREADFRED:

The ideal solution, considering the F-14's $200+ price, would have been to include pilots. Collectors who like to display their models without pilots would not put them in the cockpit. Collectors who want pilots, would put them in the cockpit. That would make everyone happy. But as seen by this thread, would-be owners are scrambling for makeshift, mediocre pilot substitutes.
I hope JSI does offer optional F-14 pilots in the future and should include pilots for the F-15 and SU-27. Considering the $200+ prices, that's not asking a lot.

I agree, I think the F-14 should come with pilots. I was just saying that I don't use them for the way I display my planes.

If the folks at JSI are of the opinion that a price tag in excess of $200 doesn't allow for pilots, then, at the very least, they should sell them as an option, so that you don't have to incur in additional costs just to get a silly Hello Kitty frankenfigure to sit in the cockpit.

At least 21st WWII pilot figures are (or were) readily available, but the modern stuff is harder to find. Maybe someone should try to fashion a Tom Cruise lookalike out of a Christmas tree cookie dough figure. :?

i've used the soldier force pilot head a few times. It's pretty good; i put on a new oxygen mask have a bunch from keyring joe pilot figures i snagged years ago. The head is a bit big though, looks noticably large but not a big deal. Works particularily well in the F-16 since it's over scale anyways. The body is horrible though, i doubt it will even fit in the cockpit.

If anyone bought any admiral F-86 jets, you can always use those figures for the F-14 since mine got thrown right out. They are thee worst looking figs I have ever seen. The aliens that came with the "lost squadron TBMs" even look more human.

While at ToysRus yesterday I saw the "True Heroes" brand of 3 3/4 figure that was a modern soldier/paratrooper and although the sculpt wasnt that great, he has what looks like a pilot helmet and an oxygen mask. I think he could make a good upper half pilot. Anybody else see these? thoughts?
I picked one up and can try and post a pic if someone can tell me which is the best pic site to post from.

Sorry - camera batteries not charged:
Here is a pic of 6 pilots. The one I have is on bottom row middle with the red helmet with lighting bolts. The pilot on the right of him is also a good candidate for a melon transplant:

i have the bottom row right guy, which looks like the same but green helmet. Either way they can really use a new oxygen mask but otherwise the head is pretty good, albeit a bit big.

I still think we'll be LUCKY to see the F-14 by Christmas. But, I'm ready for it now.

Not bad for a $1.50 each and a little work with decals.

Here's what I used for the model:

Great work! With a little paint, those figures actually cleaned up nicely. I am not too wild about the odd proportions, but you really did a nice job with them!

they'll probably look ok in the cockpits, if they fit, as the cockpit sides, controls etc will partially hide them and their odd proportions

Odds are this Chap Mei guy won't fit in the F-14. I put him in the BBI F-16 and you can just make him fit. In the F-18 he's just a tad too big can't quite close the canopy. Since the F-14 is a 2 seater I'm sure the canopy will be snug (I think the F-16 is a tad overscale anyways).
