Steven Bochco is the writer/creator of "Hill Street Blues", "L.A. Law", and "NYPD Blue". He will be the executive producer of FX's new show "Over There".
I expect he will have some involvment in writing as well. For that reason I am very, excited about this show.
Here is some information: The FX site and a fan site.

Questions about: Unit roles and its members.

Post by 75th Ranger » Wed Jun 29, 2005 3:06 am

What unit are these soldiers in?
I'm concerned with the women in a role of combat becuase, eventhough women had had to fight in Iraq, it is not their military unit role since they are not assigned to combat arms.
Does anyone knows or is this show going to be a really liberal show?
No offense but i want things to be portraited right, hopefully they will.
keep me posted,

Haven't we already seen females in combat. While not in a combat job they certinally have been taking up arms when attacked, and in most cases did as good as men in the same circumstances.

We just saw a Silver Star (the first for a woman) awarded to a woman leading a counter attack in Iraq after an ambush.

I'm a big fan of women in combat. With the Israeli's since 1946, I believe they did the job when called upon to do it. Where the upper body strength is not necessary they (women) can do whatever is necessary. As pilots, gunners, whatever.

I certinally have met some women in my life that, given the training, I wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley.

I'm looking forward to the show to see if women are portrayed in the jobs they have been doing "Over There", or if it is a liberal, feel good snow job about love life in the trenches.

Hopefully it will be realistic.....
I have nothing against women, but i'm a prior member of the combat arms, the infantry branch, and especially the Ranger batallion and it has always been a guys unit....unit cohesion and commaradery...it is know as the "Band of Brothers"......not the band of brothers and sisters....anyways, if they do their job, good for them, but don't make this show as a squad of integrated soldiers that all they do is act in a combat role.
hopefully if they are a support unit or an MP unit tey will stay within missions that are encompassed by those units.
take care,

Well, you aren't going see see women in an infantry platoon, that's for sure. But, as TTT mentioned, with the current ops tempo and methods of attack, women are definately in the heat of things like at no other time in US military history. We're not talking about captured nurses in the Phillipines. These are women mixing it up in the deep end when convoys are getting shot up. So, some female PFC in supply is just as subject to combat as a NG infantryman from 1/162 IR. I'm happy they are issuing the new combat badges to troops outside infantry. War ain't what it used to be. Anyways, the CIB is now overrated due to the watered down engagement rules used for entitlement. I remember grilling a couple 19 year olds right after Panama about their CIB's. It was there that they lowered the required line time from 30 days down to 24 hours "in a hostile combat AREA." Don't get me wrong, they deserve everything they get..... I'm getting off target here, hehehehe....

Anyways, if a women wants to go into combat, then let 'em have it. I don't have a problem with it in today's society. It seemed like the Silver Star recipient held her own. Now how much of hat was politics, who knows.... My only concern is the muscular strength issue. Only a few women could truly match a guy in hand-to-hand....

Ski, my friend, just so you know, I got my CIB in PANAMA!...C 3rd / 75th Ranger batallion, and I also got my combat jump over there. We lost some great guys there and some friends got shot.
Taking the airport and especially the terminal that we had to clear was some scary stuff...and we were getting fired at by a lot of Panamanian troops, and YES! we were shooting back, it was really sad and impressive to see the aftermath of our doing, plus knowing that we had to march abot 20 miles to the "Comandaicia" to go ahead and do it again.
War is hell! and only a small drop of it is needed to leave an ever lasting impression!

As I said before, You take care, keep your head down, and keep the security up at all times!
Hope to have a chance to meet you in person one day when you get back!
And remember, I'm always your RANGER combat buddy!
take care,

So who wants to hook a brother up? Anyone have the skills to Tivo Over There, burn it to DVD and literally mail it over there?
As I said in this thread, I am on my way back to Iraq and it look like I'll miss at least the first season. Too bad, I was really looking forward to that show.

Don,
All the best on your 2d tour. Your service is not lost on us. I do not have TIVO but will ask a friend what it would take to do the above. Hopefully he can make it happen.
