Buying the JSI Corsair

Post by cornbreadfred » Fri Jul 24, 2009 11:50 am

I am kind of going back and forth on getting the JSI Boyington Corsair. What is holding me back is that I have two of the excellent BBI Corsair models. I do have the 21st Century Corsair, but in my opinion it now way compares the the BBI version. What do you guys think? The JSI does seem to have a nice paint scheme. Just wondering if I should get one are not? :?
Fred, really looking forward to the JSI 1/18th scale Grumman F-14 Tomcat.

CORNBREADFRED:

I already have the BBI Daisy June. I was leaning towards the JSI Corsair, but decided against it because apparently Boyington never really flew that Corsair (so it doesn't have any historical importance to me) and Badcat said the JSI detailing/mold isn't an improvement over the 21st Century version which is inferior to the BBI Corsair. I'll admit the weathering on the JSI Corsair is really impressive. Most importantly, I'll save the money from the JSI Corsair and apply it towards the JSI F-14, which I'm leaning towards.

Major Gregory "Pappy" Boyington's F4U-1A Corsair, decorated with 20 little Japanese flags, adorned with the nickname Lulubelle, and just below the canopy stencilled "Gregory Boyington, Major - USMC." There's even a contemporary photograph of Pappy in the famous plane.

The only problem is that it was really nothing more than a "photo op." Boyington never flew #86 in combat.

In fact, the Marine fliers during the Solomons campaign flew any plane they could get. It wasn't like the Eighth Air Force in Europe, where each pilot had a personal plane and supporting crew. At the end of a thin supply line, largely dependent on Navy logistics, dedicating specific planes to specific pilots was a luxury the Marines just didn't have. Also, it's my speculation that the Marines, as a "Naval" service, followed the habits and customs of the senior service. The Navy pilots, operating from cramped carriers, always shared planes.

Whether to get one or not depends solely on you

The JSI plane does have that great weathered paint scheme and the whole Boyington association going for it. Those points aside, it is still largely the same old 21c plane, save that the droptank has been modified. The XD Corsair was an early 21c plane designed over seven years ago. While it has held up well over the years, it certainly does not compare to the BBI version in terms of detail and quality. The BBI plane can also be had for cheaper from some retailers at the moment.

I elected not to go with the JSI Corsair. I already have two 21c Corsairs, including the original Boyington aircraft, and the original BBI version which is my favorite 1:18 plane in my collection. I don't need another, especially as it costs more for just a new box and paintjob. I also came to the same conclusion about the P-38, even though I like the "Putt Putt Maru" scheme and could use a PTO P-38 in my collection. The two 21c P-38s I already have are enough.

Where JSI will really get my business is with new releases, namely the F-14

I just got my shipping confirmation from Bad Cats yesterday too,I also live in Cali so i could get it any day.
The reason why i chose to get this bird was because the weathering looks about right for the early version Corsairs and it did not have the red border around the stars and bars.
Will pass on the P-38 since i have Putt Putt and McGuire lightnings already.
I'll save for the F-14 when it comes out.

I added the pilot figure i had from my TBM 1:18 i had..It looks so much like Pappy i had to use it.
The last picture has Pappy's Corsair flying next to BBI's F-18 Golden Knights Hornet.:D Legends Heritage Flight.
Enjoy the pictures.

Nice setup with the Corsair and F-18. I like the paint work on the Corsair.

It is Pappy! It’s the figure they were going to use for their new plane which never came out. They also made the other figure look like George Bush for the Bush Avenger that never showed up. Their likenesses are way to close to be an accident.

I also noticed this. If you swap heads between the avenger pilot and the 21st corsair pilot you can get the figure they showed. Now we just need to figure out where the ground crew figures ended up...

I did exactly that two years ago for the figure with my S1 Boyington Corsair. The Avenger crew figure is almost spot-on with Boyington's looks and when the head is stuck on the original Boyington Corsair's figure (that had the VMF-114 stenciled on the lifejacket to boot) it makes a very decent look-alike figure.

It looks the way a Corsair should look in the south Pacific.
I really like how JSI weathered this Corsair . Only little flaw i see was it does not have the plastic pitot tube like the BBI Corsairs have. But this JSI Corsair is a big improvement to the 21st Boyington version. Thanks for the info on the Boyington figure.

Wasn't going to get one, but after seeing the pics I am thinking about it. Deffinetly a different scheme, from the dark navy blue all the others seem to have. Just wish somebody could make a corsair with the flaired out radiator cowls. That one modification as well as some propotionate tires would pay dividends.

The plane looks pretty good! I don't understand why the canopy armor plate above and behind the pilot wasn't painted, though....

REMEMBER TO LOOSEN THE TWO SCREWS AT EACH WING HINGE BEFORE BREAKING THEM IF YOU HAVEN'T HAD A 21ST CORSAIR, YET.
BY THE WAY, THE WINGS WILL STAY UP OR DOWN EVEN IF YOU DO BREAK THEM...

Well i had a few hours today to work with the JSI Corsair I added a pitot tube from a old BBi Corsair wings i had laying around for parts. Since the JSI version only has the rubber tips on theirs.
All i had to do was pull it out and the pitot tube fit right in along with a little glue.
then i took a another picture of it using sepia to make it look like 1943..:D

My local Hobbytown USA store is carrying the JSI products 8)

I was in there today and they had 4 Corsairs, 4 P-38s and 1 Tiger. I got a really good look at the Tiger and Corsair. The paint jobs are awesome, and I had to stand there deciding whether or not to impulsively shell out $70 or $90 for a repaint. Common sense won out this time around

Still, I am very glad to see that my Hobbytown store is carrying JSI. They have had a contract with Merit International for years, getting in all the BBI products at one time or another, and they also dealt with 21c. I will probably wind up simply getting my F-14 there and save on what is going to be a hefty shipping quote.

TMANTHE GREAT:

Did your Hobbytown USA have any info on the JSI F-14 such as price, release date, etc?

Actually, I didn't ask. It is only an assumption on my part that they will get the plane in when everybody else does given that they have the current JSI selection. However, assuming the employee that dealt with the 21c & BBI stuff still works there, I might ask him. I'll report back on that when I get the chance
