Anyone have these problems with their BBi P51?

Post by Morian Miner » Sun Jul 24, 2005 11:32 am

I finally broke down and bought this. But, I'm having a few problems with the bird, and wondering if these are common or did I just get the dud. (I already had chucked most of the packaging, which is why I just didn't return it)

- The most irritating it the canopy seems to bow in at the bottom, so if you tilt the plane any, it comes right off and hangs on the antenna. This also seems to prevent the canopy from staying in the closed position.

- the airscoop on the bottom, the front part keeps coming off. I know, glue it and quit whinning, but I'm wondering if they all were like this.

- the "hinge" on the landing gear covers seems a little short, and they like to pop off if you barely touch them.

I know these are nit-picks, but I don't remember if anyone else had similar issues when they first came out. And you only notice these when you actually "play" with the plane. On display, I'm really happy with it.

The only problem that I had with my Mustang was with the radiator scoop coming off, as you noted. Although it would come off, it took some doing. As for the landing gear doors, I don't quite understand the problem you are having. Is it with the doors that cover the wheels or the ones attached to the struts? I have not had any problems with the landing gear. Same for the canopy, no problems.

I take it you purchased yours at TRU? I got mine in the first run from BCA. That may have something to do with it...... who knows. If you need the box and packaging to return yours, let me know. I think I still have everything from mine. You are welcome to it.

No probs here buddy. I glued the radiator scoop on so no probs there. And the landing gear and canopy shouldnt be giving you problems. You might have gotton a bad one from TRU which wouldnt be a surprise.

The doors that cover the wheels are the ones that keep falling off.

Thanks for the offer, USCGSARdog, but by time you shipped all the boxes it would cost more than me making a few mods to fix the sucker. I really hope this was just a freak occurance and not some QC problem that 21C had with the P47s. Especially with the paratroopers coming out.

I have that same problem. Since I've hung it, it isn't a big deal anymore... but when I take it down I have to be mindful of it falling off.

I have the opposite... I can hardly get those doors open they are so tight!

I had one that I dragged to all the air shows it must have been touched by at least 7k hands(no joke ) and never had one problem with it. It was dropped 4 times on the ground and it went back to work.

I didn't have any of the above problems with mine, save that the wing landing gear doors closed too securely, making them difficult to open without the aid of a knife blade. The problem was solved by shortening the little pegs on the inside of the doors and now they work fine.

I think QC has really become a problem for bbi as they try to keep prices down for mass distribution. :(

Elite Force figures always crumbled which was ok with me but I'm sure led to a lot of returns at TRU. Then there are the lousy P-51s you may find at tru on any given day (see above). Now we hear that the Corsair has it's own QC issues to look out for. Finally, while reading about the new figures at Target this jumped out at me:

"what really kills these is they seem to come from a bad factory."

- Supposedly the painting is lousy and some of the figures are 'loose' while others 'tight'. This is obviously a result of keeping costs low for Target, but I just hope this trend stops. BBI stuff is falling victim to the same QC issues that hurt XD at WM. Please bbi, have some pride and keep the 'Elite Force' product a good product.

Yeah, I finally found my first P-51 at TRU today and the paint job was terrrible. Glad I already picked one up a while back from BCA.

I know what you are talking about as far as the gear is concerned. On mine, the left landing gear strut panel pops off if you open it quickly to the open position. The strut is just barely too close to the opening in the wing, so the panel catches it and pops off...... No big problems, though....
