Finished my 1/16th T-34

Post by GooglyDoogly » Mon Nov 01, 2004 6:14 pm

Just got done with this monster. There were some fitting problems, and there's no way to secure the turret to the hull, just gravity. Anyway, my Tiger now has something to shoot at.

Excellent! I don't know what a Russian tanker would wear, but there has to be some figure that would pass for a crewman.

This is the Trumpeter T-34/76 Model 1943. Now I feel like an idiot because I built and detailed all the interior parts, and you only get to see 25% of it in the end

Anyway, despite some problems that Trumpeter should have seen and fixed, This is a fantastic model, complete with PE! I recommend this kit to anyone with the smallest amount of modelling skills. I did it and it's only my second armor kit!

As for size comparison, The XD Tiger is a bit wee-looking compared to the T-34, but the XD Panther is a bit bigger than the 1/16 T-34 and looks about right.

As for crew, I wonder why Trumpeter didn't include some? But I found an online company that sells resin 1/16 Russian tank crews for 30.00 each (sadly, no sitting figs).

You did a bang up job with this one. Thanks for sharing the pics. I plan on working on my T-34 kit this summer. I've been looking for crew members. Where did you find them as I would like to buy them as well?

I spent maybe a total of 4 days on building this model. Despite the huge amount of parts, its very easy to build. I want to take a break before I do the T-34/85 version since that's the one that I really want to "xtreme detail".

As for the tank crews, I found this site that offers 1/16 resin soviet tank crews for $30 each or $50 a pair.

http://www.japanesearmorking.com/jak3.htm

As for dimensions, I can post pics of size comparison between the xd Tiger, sherman and panther.

This kit ranges from $50-$180 dollars. The $50 ones are from Hong Kong so they'll hit you with $100 shipping charges...if they don't steal your money out right (past experience  ) My local hobby shop has this kit for $179.
But I found mine in Ebay for $124, that includes Priority Shipping and insurance.[/url]

Those Japanese tanks look interesting. Probably something we'll NEVER see from a major manufacturer, would see a series of Zeros in different paint schemes before we see Japanese armour!

Very nice work on that T-34!
I'm curious about how much paint work you did on it, since I would like to build one but have amateur painting skills. Did you paint the tank exterior, tread links, etc. or is that pretty much an out-of-the-box finish? The interior work looks great. Did Trumpeter mold any pieces in different colors or did you have to paint it up as well?

Thanks
Rogo

The kit cames only in two colors, light grey and olive drab. The track comes in glossy black.

I'm an amateur painter too so the trick in painting all those little parts is, assemble the small pieces first, then spray paint/airbrush them individually before gluing them to the tank.

IMO, if you choose not to paint your model, the T-34 looks nice unpainted, but you'll be unable to hide glue mistakes, sanded areas, etc.

They look good together. One thing is funny though, the Panther is not in scale with the Tiger. The Tiger should be taller by about quarter of a meter, but in those picture you see the Panther is taller. I would say that the T-34 is to long and wide, if the other stuff was right, so it looks good to me. Even the Sherman should be shorter than the Tiger. The T-34 would work for a 41 version with everything said and how it looks with the other armor. It doesn't over power the other tanks like you would think being 1/16th scale. Great find and work on that tank.
