I think I can build the sagami from the pics but I need to have some info.

1. Does the mounting ( the piece with 2 holes ) stop even with the door ?
2. How wide is the open door area ?
3. How tall is the open door area?

It looks like the gun sitting on the pintel is centered on the door.
1. Does the mounting ( the piece with 2 holes ) stop even with the door ?
No, it sticks out about a 1/8th of an inch (I will pm you some pics)
2. How wide is the open door area ?
About 2" wide
3. How tall is the open door area?
About 2 3/4" tall

as mamow said, most huey c's used bungee mounted m60's, it was the d's that commonly used pintle mounts (by the way are you still going to make a D cabin for the 21c huey?).

I used to have a great picture of a door gunner with one foot on the skid firing his m60 below the huey. The door gunners wore a 'monkey harness' , which was a 5 point harness attached to the ceiling of the huey by a 10 foot long cord.

I am in the crowd that would like a "D" model and will pass on these mounts. As far as M-60 choices I like the look of the M-60 with spade grips and the large circular site on it. This proposed mod looks like it was a afterthought that got stuck on some "C" models to add the ability to fire from the sides of aircraft.

Another pic or design of the possible mount (which I think looks way better imo especially with the added hardeware):

Image

I believe most "C" models were gunships with forward facing rockets and machine guns ( dual M-60's or mini-guns) I don't think they ferried troops much unless in emergency situations or Special Ops. They served more of a ground support role.

I used to have a picture that had one of the mounts (swingarm) mounted on the door of a Loach that was one cool looking bird. It allowed the co-pilot to sling some lead also a pic of a M-60 on a bungee on a loach before as well.

Anybody ever tried to make the square rocket pods for the "C" models or the dual M-60's (like these pics)

There is a ton of options as far as gunship add-ons that would all be cool.

Here is a crazy option that I have seen in more than one pic:

Again this is all food for thought. I want a "D" model to load down with troops or make a medivac bird. The gunship is ok but I would much rather have different rocket pods and fixed guns rather than a fixed M-60 door gun mount.

Well this is just the way the Pavehawk project took off.

That Loach swing arm looks bad a$$.

I will do the Sagami swing arm it looks like acool project.

Bird Dog gave me the idea of twin/ quad M-60s on the sides . This looks cool as well.

I think that the Huey D can be done . But are there a lot of guys out there who are willing to hack up there $100 plus helo?

If it can be done I think that a tube extention may work. But the rear areodynamic shaped body actually slides back on the fusalage boom to allow for the extra cabin area.

It looks like to do a full stretch Huey I will have to a make an entire main cabin fuse from the cockpit back to the boom like a clam shell.

I don't thik that I will have to make a full engine cowling. It looks mainly as a new fairing to the front of the engine cover with maybe a little bump here or there to the rear of the cover.
And of course the longer skids.

So how many guys want the "D" vertion ?

Again I will do the sagami mounts w/ M-60s.

Who is up for the quad M-60s?

Maybe I need to make a new poll post unless somebody else wants to do it.

I'm in for the twin M60s. I've already done a mini-gun custom for one of my Hueys so it would be cool to add a Huey with twin M60s to my Huey collection too.

I've thought about making the square rocket tube rack before. It shouldn't be too hard. The right size hollow round styrene stock, solid styrene stock to use as the missiles inside the tubes, and the right size flat styrene stock should be a good base to start with.
Go Ugly Early in 1/18!!

Still waiting and wishing for a 1/18 A-10 Warthog.

PH,
I would be in for:
- the sagami mounts w/ M-60s.

- quad M-60s?
(Will this be on a pintle mount?)

Again, I know you are just gathering info on who is interested, but what cost would be involved?

OK Guys this is what I can gleen from pics and measurements.

The B and D vrsions are almost the same in legnth give or take a few inches. It looks to me the rear of the cabin the boat shaped part has been moved back on the rear boom. To make the large crew area.

I do not think that the fuse has to be cut at all. The boat shaped rear end pieces have got to be shaved off and slid back onto the boom.

This is very good news because the intergity of the model will be there.

So larger doors will have to be made . Fill on top of the cabin and around the rear boom/boat shaped joint is all there is to it.

It looks like only minor fairing modification and skid lengthning will do for this mod. I do not think it will be as doundting as I originially thought.

Of course to really know what has to be done is that I need a 1/35 plastic model and a 21st 1/18 Huey to get an exact comparison.

This conversion is DOABLE  :D :D :D

i'm pretty sure the D model is longer than the B/C. The cabin was stretched about 3 feet, new engine nacelles up top.

I think the best way to do it is for you to make a whole new front fuselage. The existing skids, rotor, and tailboom can be re-used from the 21c Huey. (the rotor and skids aren't quite right but are close enough....you can offer perfect rotor and skids as an upgrade kit, perhaps).

The existing 21c Huey's interior, cockpit interior details, cockpit canopy and windows can be re-used as well, so all you need to make is a shell plus windows for the larger side doors and everything else can be canabalized from the 21c Huey.

The D/H model fuselage is actually about sixteen inches shorter than the B/C. The entire cabin and fuselage forward of the tail boom was redesigned to provide more cabin space, including areas on either side of the transmission housing. The engine nacelle was enlarged slightly and lengthened to accommodate a larger engine, and each rotor lengthened by two and a half feet. The skids were also redesigned and lengthened.
Pickel is right, the conversion is doable. But it's going to take a lot of work on the modeler's part and you won't be able to get too picky on the details.

How can the D be shorter when it was stretched to make a larger cabin space? If true than the tailboom must be much shorter on the D than on the B/C.

If what i'm reading is true the C was in fact longer than the D/H.

42' 7" for the C, 41' 10" for the D.

Yep, its true. They made most of the extra space by opening up the area on either side of the transmission. On the B/C models the cabin ended at the firewall in front of the transmission.
The body was also extended further back toward the tail and under the engine on the D to make room for the fuel tanks, etc. that were displaced by the increased cabin. The D model is much more bulky than the B/C's which helps with the overall size illusion.

Like I have said , they slid the rear boat shaped looking area back further on to the boom.

If Ta-152 is correct the diff is about 1/2 inch in 1/18 scale.

So if you shave the rear side panels off slide them back on the tail boom and remake the doors and a little smoothing and filling. We are down town.

Bird Dog is sending me a sacraficial Huey and Razor is searching for a 1/35 Huey model so this project is in the works.

BUT I DO NEED TO GET ON THAT FLAK GUN. THERE HAVE BEEN A BUNCH OF GUYS WHO HAVE PAID ALREADY AND I NEED TO GET INTO THAT.

BUT I WILL DO MY BEST TO SQUEEZE THIS IN SOME WERE.

I took time off this weekend for Mothers day to work on any XD.

Or Mrs . Spke forbade me to work on it whatever applies.

I will try to have the proto type Sagami mount done to post on Monday. In between Pavehawk pours.

I still need some pics of the Apachee radome to try and get that out as well.

Guys,
I am trying to get PH a 1/35 scale Huey "D" model for him to use to scale up to 1/18.
Here are my choices:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Dragon-3538-1-35-UH ... .m20.l1116

Pro:
-Has the M23 M60 gun system
Con:
-Expensive, hard to find and seller in China (long time to get this)

or

http://cgi.ebay.com/DML-UH-1D-HEER-Heli ... .m20.l1116

Pro:
-This is a UH-1D version
-Less expensive and seller in US
Con:
-This is the German military version. (Is it still the same as our US Vietnam Era Huey?)

Both of these say they are UH-1D versions. Any of you Huey experts out there, give us your opinion of these 2 models.
Can both be used?
Is the German Huey the same as the US version?

Razor, I wouldn't go with the German model because it looks like it doesn't have gun mounts.

If you have a hobby lobby or similiar stores close by I would check out their selection. The Huey is always a popular model and is usually in stock.

Plus it would save you some on shipping especially from overseas.

I have checked both Hobby Lobbys in my area - didn't have a 1/35 or 1/32 Huey "D" version.
