Here is the basic idea in this picture.....

The "B" model is what we have....and the "D" model as you can see adds and good bit more.

Razor I don't believe I have seen any pics of this mounted on the "B" model as they were mostly used for gunships. I guess 21st wanted to make gunships and not troop transports.

The differences between the B/C and D model Hueys are huge. The entire body was redesigned. I really don't think there is an easy way to convert one to the other and have it look in any way accurate. The tail boom and rotor are about the only reusable parts.

Even if made some kind of fusalage extention - we would have to tear up a huey to make it longer, right?
So, if PH could produce a M23 mounted M60, we could mount it on the outside of the "B" model we have. Wouldn't they have made in field modifications to these "B" models till the "D"'s were online?
Or were the "B" and "D" models out at the same time?

Gunships had bungee-mounted 60s, though there was an external mount:

What do ya know, you can put a Sagami mount on the B/C.

A Sagami would be far less invasive than trying to convert to a D. You still can't pull off the aforementioned Night Hawk, but hey, it;s better than nothin'.

TA-152.....thanks for the pics the last one looks extremely doable and would be a nice add on for the 21st Huey.

As far as the "D" goes I guess it will have till wait until I get another Huey and start the choppin'

My "D" probably (certainly) won't be 100% accurate but what the heck these are only toys when you really get down to it.

You guys are right . It looks like the whole mid section from the back of the cockpit past the engine has got to be legnthed and redone. The shape looks a little rounder and the bottom has a airfoil shape. Unless that is a shadow distortion.

BUT IT CAN BE DONE. It looks like I would have to make two clam shells with new engine covers.
The modeler would have to cut just behind the cockpit and cut the tail off somewere to scale.

The skids would have to be legnthend as well. But that is an easy one. Cut the center of the skid and slide them in a brass tube the right diameter.

No way to get a cost on this until the project is ( if ) started.

Would you guys want the interior or just the clam shells?

GUESSING the 2 finished ( unpainted ) clam shells $50-$80.

I would need a 1/18 scale Huey and a 1/35 or 1/32 scale D model plastic kit to scale off of. And probably 8 guys to commit and we can do this.

IT LOOKS LIKE THE MOTHER 1/18 HUEY WILL HAVE TO BE CUT.

BUT WHO EVER ( CRANEDRIVER ? ) WILL GET THE HUEY BACK WITH THE MODIFICATION DONE FOR HIM

Anybody down?

Is this going to be applicable to the "Slick" and the Hoghead II as well as the CIA Huey? I've never seen them in person so I don't know if the body is exactly the same.

Yes. They're all the same sculpt, just repaints.

I remmeber the CIAs for $10 at Walmart stacked to the ceiling.

I guess that is 4 guys so far. I searched e-bay and they have a couple of " D "s in China but my local hobby shop has a 1/35 Dragon kit for $46.

It looks like the kit has the gun mount in it. The gun mount does not look that hard to do and it uses a M-60 of which I have a mould of already.

I guess that would be the short cut rather than doing the whole mod clam shell.

If you just make the gun mount I would be happy with that for now. Still want to strecth the bird down the road eventually.

At this point I will take anything I can get for the Huey.

PH if you decide to do just the gun mounts I will still send you my bird for mock up purposes and such. The rocket pods are already off

I'd prefer a Sagami that mounts right to the weapons pylon as opposed to the inaccurate M23.

If someone can tell me were to find the styrene i see all the scratch builders use i'll go about doing it myself.

I'd go for the Sagami mount that attached to the weapons pylon as shown in one of the earier pictures posted.

It will complete my Huey custom below:

Still a few things to finish up on it but the gun mounts will definitely make it whole.....

Nice job Birdog! Those miniguns sure add to the Huey. I'd still like to see the full D conversion done, but I guess the mounts would be fine for now..
