I was touring the Monkey Depot (MD) site and went to the contact page, here there is a Google map link, and seeing that MD is located next to Falcon Field Airport I simply can not resist the opportunity to explore any airport.
The Airport has some interesting aircraft, lots of Huey's and some Cobra's, also Bronco’s, Tracker’s, DC7s, Hudson’s, Mitchell’s just to name a few but the following item peaked my curiosity.

So what scale do think this beast is, could it be 1/18th?
What scale is this??
What scale is this??

Well, not knowing exactly which class it is and being lazy enough to not size it to a known dimension (wingspan of a known aircraft type), and rounding to keep everything within magnitude, I'm going with:
~25 FT length of model
~750 ft length of WWII BB
~scale of model would be 1/30

Tanks for the memories

I can't see any details all that well, but from the shadow on the ground and the general outline it looks like a Pennsylvania-class battleship. Chunk's estimations sound right on. The model is about as long and likely a little shorter than one of the nearby Hudson's wings, and a Hudson has a 65 foot wingspan. Knock off a few feet for the width of the fuselage and cut the remainder in half and you get something under 30 feet.
It's amazing that you even noticed it in the first place!

Now I have a machine gun (SPACE GUN!). Ho ho ho.
Thanks, my best guess was that it is one of the earlier class of US WWII battleship, but my knowledge in this area is extremely limited and I have no idea of the sort of dimensions these things run to IRL, guess I could have been less lazy and just Googled the info.chunks wrote:Well, not knowing exactly which class it is and being lazy enough to not size it to a known dimension (wingspan of a known aircraft type), and rounding to keep everything within magnitude, I'm going with:

You did see all three Bronco's and the second OD B-25? There just so much cool stuff there I'd love to visit. Also of interest is the Robison landing or hovering at the end of the runway.sluff wrote:Wow, it took a while to find the Broncos so good eye spud, I think your battleship sunk the depot because it is missing from the empty field your link shows it in?
The ship appears to be outside a museum as there is also a twin AA mount outside and you can also see the shadows being cast from two pole mounted scale models at either end of the building/hanger entrance, there also appears to be another shadow in the top left from a large scale UH-1.
For some reason Google-map would not let me link the new camera position hence the MD refernence, I was also to lazy to fire up Google-Earth and mark it properly, will have to do it later though as this airport is just way cool and needs further exploring.
As I said I just can't resist snooping around airports, you never know what you'll find, the interesting thing to me is the Hudson close to the model ship appears to be in RAAF markings, this may be one of the two such aircraft that used to reside down here in my home state of Victoria, fortunately at least one of them stayed in Australia all be it across the border in New South Wales, but at least it still flies the Aussie air show circuit.Grilledcheese wrote:I can't see any details all that well, but from the shadow on the ground and the general outline it looks like a Pennsylvania-class battleship.
