Reissue of some Monogram 1/32 armor...

Post by binder001 » Wed Mar 04, 2009 10:50 am

Periodically Revell-Monogram reissues older kits from each of the previous companies for collectors and nostalgia buffs. This year they are re-releasing a couple of the old Mongram 1/32scale armor kits - the M3 "Lee" and the M4 "Sherman Hedgehog". These are older kits and not as detailed as the current Tamiya and Dragon stuff in 1/35th but they fit well with 21C, FoV and other 1/32 armor. The kits are easy to build. The "Lee" kit is now in stock at the Squadron Shop.

Maybe if we start a letter writing campaign to Revell-Monogram they will reissue other parts of this classic line such as the M8 armored car, the German 8-wheel armored car, or the JagdPanzer IV kits.

Sign me up, I want those kits bad, and I'm tired of hunting for them on ebay...

I used to have the Screaming Mimi.

I wouldn't mind seeing more of those as well, especially German stuff not offered by 21st/FOV. The Jagdpanzer IV being one of those.

Fortunately, they already have quite a bit of 1/32 airpower available so that's a fallback option at least - just got my Ju88A-1 in the mail yesterday, in fact. Can't wait to hang it up with all my 21st and my two BBI's (please make more, BBI). Have my eyes on an ME-110 and a P-38 on ebay right now.

And if anyone's interested, there is a 1/32 J2M3 Raiden MISB on ebay - only $149.99 BIN. If it dropped $100 I would buy it in a heartbeat as from the pics it looks to be an awesome kit and Japanese planes aren't exactly pouring out of the pre-built companies storehouses, as we all know.

I too had the "Mimi". I especially liked the M-16 Quad and I still have the seated radioman from the 'weasel', fifty years down the road.

If you hunt around you can still find the old 1/32 models from Monogram. Just recently I could have purchased the US Greyhound for about $10-$12. I currently have the kits for the M8 Greyhound, Screaming Mimi, and the British Matilda. I already have the Elefant, Matilda, Hedgerow Sherman and the German 4 wheeled armored scout vehicle assembled. They look good with FOV and 21st.

I also really liked the submachinegunner in the accessory soldier set. And the guy with the rifle & bayonet.

1/32 Monogram Kits

Post by digimatt » Wed Mar 04, 2009 4:32 pm

I've been picking up loose 1/32 Monogram parts on ebay for a while now. Mostly I've been after crew figures to fill out my 21st and FOV vehicles. I scored on a lot that had 20 or so of the seated US infantrymen (plus some German crew figures). A little surgery to the M14s they're carrying and my US halftracks are in business. This same lot had a bunch of random vehicle parts in it as well that, after I sorted them all, turned into a complete Jagdpanzer and a complete Stug IV. There were also a load of other vehicle parts, mostly bogeys and other drive train parts. If anyone is missing a part or four to complete one of the 1/32 Monogram kits PM me with a description and I'll see what I have.

I've never been able to understand why any of these companies have never offered figure sets of sitting troopers. Whether it be Monogram from years ago or 21st or FOV, they all had seated figures. I know I would purchase large quantities of them. Presently, FOV and 21st have plenty of different seated GI's and Germans...... I now search for Marx seated GI's and paint them as well as Marx seated Germans.

And the wonderful thing about those old soldiers is that they never put down or lostb their weapons either.

I remember those old kits quite fondly. I built lots of them but in particular I remember the Lee, the Grant, the Jagdpanzer, the Ostwind and the 1/48 B17. Does anyone remember the flyers that came with the kits with painting and diorama building tips by Shepherd Paine(http://sheperdpaine.com/index.htm)? Scroll down and click on the flyers: http://sheperdpaine.com/monogram/index.htm

Also check these gallery sections for Shep's armor and aircraft models:

I still have all of these kits, unbuilt, except for the Elefant. Bought them off ebay right about the time 21st and FOV were coming onto the scene. Also had the weasel and deuce and a half. Will build them, I guess, someday.

1/32 Monogram kits

Post by digimatt » Fri Mar 06, 2009 5:06 pm

I don't think I ever saw a 1/32 Monogram Elefant or Matilda. Anyone have a picture? Italeri had the Elephant, and Tamiya had the Matilda, in 1/35. But I don't think I've ever seen either in kit form in 1/32. Airfix has a reasonably nice Crusader in 1/32 though.

21st demise

Post by digimatt » Fri Mar 06, 2009 5:15 pm

Off topic, but I spoke to someone at Monkey Depot a moment ago while I was ordeing some stuff and they pretty much confirmed that this is the demise of 21st Century. They said that 21st lost their Walmart contract in January, and their Toys R Us contract as well about the same time. No real surprise I suppose, just sorry to see them go. I have to admit they sort of fulfilled that long ago dream, when building Monogram tanks and playing with the Marx soldiers, of off-the-shelf, accurate scale vehicles and planes. Oh well, the economics were always against them. It required low labor, mat's, and distribution costs to serve what was always a niche market at those prices. Times changed.

I have many of the original 1:32 tanks still in kit form such as the Brumbar, Lee, Grant, Hedgehog and Screemin` Mimi. I have a few I built too including the Grant, Weasel, M16, M34. M60, Pzkw IV and the eight wheel armored car.

I have the Shepard Paine booklets too. The Monogram aircraft kits that Revell is selling now have the Paine dio directions. They were very inspiring when it came to model building. Thanks for the heads-up on the new releases...

Matchbox made 1/32 aircraft models and the skill level was not that high. Every once in a while you can still find thses kits. The problem I have with the high level skill models is the amount of pieces utilized for parts of the model that will never be seen by the human eye. A perfect example is the multiple pieces used in the consruction of a motor on an aircraft or vehicle........
