P-38 Info

Post by aktiger » Mon Jun 06, 2005 4:52 pm

My first posting so hopefully I am not rehashing a topic. First, an experience some may appreciate: I was after a Samantha Payton p-38 and kept getting aced out on Ebay. I recalled that TRU had them on display at one time so I went to the local store and, sure enough, they still had it in their storage room on a shelf (intact, with some screw holes and some broken pieces). I had to get written permission from 21C for TRU to release it to me (since 21C was technically still the owner) and I purchased some replacement pieces from a well known web dealer, but that was a cheap price to pay. (Let me know if anyone would like to hear how I replaced the front wheel and retaining clip without tearing the plane apart)
Now the questions: Can someone enlighten me or direct me to a site that provides a little history of the Samantha Payton P-38, the Louise Shark P-38 and Haleakala II P-38? All I have been able to find find out is that Haleakala II was a PTO aircraft. If any of these models is poorly marked (I recall a string regarding the Louise model as being inaccurate), what would it take to authenticate the models, if that's possible? And, lastly, I have been toying with the idea of repainting the TRU acquisition (I have since acquired Samantha P NIB) and would like some suggestions / opinions / web sites regarding a repaint that would incorporate the same olive drab base color :?:

History

Samantha Payton is the granddaughter of the 21st CEO (and the daughter of Laura Michelle), so the scheme is not historically accurate.

Still, its kind of cool that they named a plane after the family of the 21c CEO, even if it isn't very accurate.

I like the Payton, and is one of the better P-38 paints, IMO. With some different decals you could make almost any of the P-38s, do to the fact most were that color.

The other great thing is that it isn't too flashy. All you have is some basic markings. That make for a good back ground fighter in dio.

Hey, Welcome to the board!!!!

As mentioned above the Samantha P-38 was painted up as a 475th FG plane with the BS nose art. It followed up the Series 1 (S1) D-Day that was accurate, but missing the "Wine Women and Song" nose art. The Shark P-38 is the worst of the lot and was supposed to be a blue paint scheme F-5 (IIRC) with camera in the nose. Hallekelea II and Putt Putt Maru are the only 2 P-38s with a 100% accurate paint scheme.

If you haven't discovered it already, I have a profile album with all of the accurate paint schemes in it. It has the information on the units you are looking for. Check it out by hitting the website button below. Let me know if it helps!

Thanks all, appreciate it. Great site, teamski and great pic, p51.
More questions: What FG is Porky II? Does any one have a suggestion for an ETO repaint using the olive drab and invasion stripes? In the same vein, does anyone know of a site where one can acquire decals that will work in a repaint (freehanding and taping can be sooo time consuming)?

As for finding some one who does decals for the 1:18 XD planes, I don't know of anyone yet. My suggestion is to find a 1:48 aftermarket decal sheet and scan it into your computer. Then enlarge it by 266% and print it out on clear or white decal film paper. You may have to cut up the aftermarket decal sheet into smaller sections to scan so that the enlarged pieces fit on one sheet of decal film without being broken up. This is what I did for my custom Big Ass Bird P-47.
