1/72 IXO Armor

Post by Tshintl » Tue May 31, 2005 6:44 pm

I saw on the Motor Pool website there should be 1/72 armor releases from IXO. Anyone have info about this; pictures, initial list of releases, etc.?

Anyone know the website for IXO?

I am with Football on this one.. I haven't heard anything besides themotorpool's statement.. :?

Here is a link to IXO's website, but I doubt you'll find anything about it on there..

New IXO info !!

Post by Shermie » Tue Aug 30, 2005 4:09 pm

:D

New info from Motor Pool's homepage:

In a bid to enter the lucrative military diecast market, Spanish-based Altaya has announced plans to produce a wide range of 1:72 scale armor. While details are still sketchy regarding pricing and dates of availability, Altaya (who apparently has some sort of relationship with Ixo Models) has posted information concerning their first batch of vehicles they intend to produce. According to their web site, the following vehicles are in the hopper: Russian T-80 main battle tank, US M1A1HA Abrams main battle tank, German Jagdpanther tank destroyer, US M48A3 Patton tank, French S-35 Somua tank, US M4 Sherman tank, German Puma armored car, German Leopard 2A5 main battle tank, British Challenger 2 main battle tank, Israeli Merkava III main battle tank, German Panther Ausf. A medium tank, German Sd. Kfz. 9 prime mover and a tank transporter. As you can see, some vehicles have already been replicated by other manufacturers while others, such as the Merkava, Puma, M48A3, Somua, and Sd. Kfz. 9 have yet to be made. We hope to have each item listed shortly. In the meantime, feel free to visit Altaya's web site, which can be found at Altaya.

Also check out the "Tank News" at www.mikestanks.com for a list of over 16 new tanks not released in 1/72 scale before. Some great models to hopefully be released !!

Ah, funny you should mention those. They are already available in Europe and though nice are not Dragon Armor quality.

Reviews from another forum:

"I got the first issue for 2.99euro here in Lisbon and I must say the kit looks nice...when your standing 5 metres from it :D Really, it's not bad for the occassional collector but for the serious modeller its quite toyish."

"King Tiger and it is 1/72. Not bad, but the paint job is a bit toyish. Not up to Dragon's standard and there are no manufacturer's marks anywhere I could see. I got mine off e-bay for 12.00 EUROS plus postage. It reminds me of the pictures I've seen of Aoshima's KT. I was intrigued when I saw it was labeled CDC001, though probably "Carros de Combate" is similar in Italian (the old CDC armour)"

Thanks for the pictures, Tshintl.

I went to Altaya's site before, but could not figure out the link to more pictures.

I believe that lineup is the same that I saw on Mike's site.

Does anyone know when these IXO AFV's will reach North American shores and at what cost? Have they made off the European continent yet, like to Australia?
It would be nice to see some more pictures from members and see their reviews about quality, detail, paint etc..

If you're familiar with Revell plastic kits, the following comparison pictures may be of help. The Altaya is the brightly pianted one. I just saw one sell on Ebay for about $6.

I think these would look pretty good with a quick wash & drybrush to bring out the highlights. Follow with a nice dullcote to eliminate the toy-like look. :D

Tshintl, have you had any hands on experience with these models? Someone said the chassis is all plastic and they thought the turret was die-cast. Can you confirm this for me? And if the turret is die-cast metal, is 100% metal or a mixture of metal and plastic?
Thanks.

M48 received

Post by Shermie » Mon Sep 19, 2005 5:21 pm

I received the M48 today, off e-bay, from a seller in Spain. I really like this piece, even though I'm spoiled by the current detail in Dragon's 1/72 offerings. (M48 is one of my favorites) 8)

The paint job is very plain, with just a few details picked out; like the lights, jerry can strap, tow cables, & turret visors. The wheels do not spin & the track is made from the usual vinyl/rubber, but has no paint to bring out the tread detail.

The whole turret is plastic as is the bottom of the chassis. The entire top of the body is metal, however, & has a good weight to it. The guns, stowage basket, & headlights are made from a stiff, but potentially brittle plastic. Also if you rotate the turret 90 degrees, it comes right off (2 tabs on the turret / 2 slots on the upper body). The main gun elevates & the MG cupola rotates as well.

I still plan on giving it a wash/drybrush treatment to bring out the few details.

I do not have a good digital camera, but if you look up Altaya tanks on e-bay, there are a couple of sellers with some close-up shots of this model.
