Matchbox Sheman ID

Post by EnemyAce » Thu Oct 28, 2004 12:24 pm

Hey guys, I was reading From the Riviera to the Rhine last night, and ran across a pic of group of Shermans, including the new Matchbox 76mm Sherman that's out now with the black/green cammo. It's described as being part of the 714th Tank Battalion of the 12th Armored, operating against the 6th SS Mountain Division during Operation Nordwind in January, 1945. It's a cool pic clearly showing tanks #710, 711, and 714, complete with the Y symbol on the sides, plus a couple more with obscured numbers - all 76mm - on a snowy field.
Maybe there's a pic out there showing the mud-cammoed 75mm version?

Hey EnemyAce,

There is a drawing in New Vanguard Sherman Medium Tank 1942-45 by Osprey Publishing showing the other tank. Although it is not exact, the camo pattern is the same. Shows as belonging to 3 Platoon, 'B' Co., 8th Tank Battalion, US 4th Armored Division Avranches, Fance, 1944.

While I no longer have the packaging for this Matchbox tank, I remember it mentioning something about France.

There are a few other drawings in this book that appear to be used in the earlier CDC Armour line as well such as "Tarentaise" & "Dundrum".

I have little doubt that companies such as Corgi, are using the many reference books out their for paint schemes.
