IJC: Is there any plan in the future for a deluxe 12" Indiana Jones with more accessories and better detail that's in the $50-$60 dollar range such as the 12" 100th Luke Skywalker from the Power of the Jedi line or the 12" Anakin/Darth Vader from the Revenge of the Sith line or is that being held aside for Sideshow?
H: There are no plans for a higher-priced IJ figure from Hasbro. Unlike Star Wars, which is sublicensed through Hasbro, Sideshow does not sublicense IJ 12" figures from us and are free to pursue their own plans.
IJC: Recently images have appeared online for the Akator Playset that now features two additional bonus figures (Mutt and Spalko). Is this an exclusive or will it see a full release to all stores?
H: It is a retailer exclusive at Sam's Club this Fall in the U.S.
IJC: Will we see a vehicle, deluxe set, or exclusive of Henry and Indiana Jones with the motorcycle and sidecar as in The Last Crusade?
H: Unfortunately, while a motorcycle with sidecar was planned, it will not make it out.

Hasbro- Dr Jones Sr. is ill after hearing the news that his "ride" will not be forthcoming:Stug45 wrote:

His son, Indiana Jones, has gathered some friends and are fighting mad:

Hasbro, you got some splanning to do....

Nothing short of a disaster. My guess is that you will be lucky to see the Temple of Doom figures, they may end up as tail-enders.dandaman wrote:Even with the recent rollbacks to $5.44 each, the Indy line is still not moving.

Like I said above, TLC's shipping a little more now with revisions and Temple figures have begun shipping to small retailers as some folks have had their orders processed. If you pre-ordered, smart for you.Jesse James wrote:TLC's trickling out a bit but I'm more concerned (well, I'm desperate for the last TLC figures I need too) about the Temple of Doom wave right now. It's starting to ship out to small retailers, and I'm not caught up from the last round.
Personally I'm just as content to see IJ die off as it's "just one more thing" to buy to me. I'll wanna blow a lot on custom fodder when they clearance as it is.
Better case packs would've greatly helped this line... It has great collector appeal but Hasbro pushed for the Episode 1 model of shipping stuff, and it blew up on them. The movie did incredibly well financially, but so did E1... Kid-interest wanes quickly and they put too much stock in needing them. They should've tried to have a contingency in place to take the line from kid-focused to collector-focused quickly, to salvage any kind of legs it could have in a limited capacity.
Some have asked about running it under the SW umbrella because they sort of go hand-in-hand with their fan-base, but Hasbro's not been receptive to that. I can't blame them, but at the same time they pretty much made the mess they're in... That and over-zealous purchasing. I don't think there was a SW board member around who didn't see the writing on the walls for this line though. It's been pretty widely assumed it would only get collector-interest and kids would phase out of it really fast, which they did.

Just got my mail-away Crystal Skeleton & Throne set
The box was beat up as heck, but the contents were in great shape and look cool! I'm surprised Hasbro shipped it in just the package and not safely packed in another box. Not much use for it as a collectable until some time in the distant future... Still, it is a neat piece.

The Problem
The problem is (and I know I'm being redundant, but it's just so frustrating) that there are so many IJ figures warming the pegs! So many!
And we're not just talking Mutt Williams here. All of the figures. They're just sitting there. I think part of it was the initial price ($6-$7) and the consumer found it hard to justify shelling out that much for a character they feel "so-so" about.
I was that way about a bunch of them. I still am that way until the price decreases. But by the same token, if the price goes down and it's past the 10/31 Crystal Skeleton mail-in deadline, then what is my motivation to buy figures at all?
They really should have thought their approach through a bit better. Seeing how many figures are left from the first initial waves is sad. Nobody bought them. They were expecting an Episode I experience (where people initially went hog wild) but that never happened. I think we all could have told them to scale it down a little and focus more on wave diversity than blasting the public with gazillions of figures, creating immediate over saturation.

Hmm
That is an interesting take on things. That the kids nowadays want nothing to do with IJ figures.
Let's explore that a bit further.
What do you think the average kid of today thinks about Indiana Jones figures? What goes through their minds with they see them on the pegs? What do they think of Indiana Jones in general?

Kids have lower attention spans than 15 or 20 years ago... That's a pretty widely accepted issue in toys these days, especially boy's toys. That's why lines like Power Rangers, Ninja Turtles, and Star Wars are incredible for the manufacturers, as long-term properties are just not common.
Indiana Jones was anything but a flop at first... High sell-through rates on figures, cases-upon-cases were replenished daily, the $20 vehicle line couldn't be kept on the shelf nor could the $10 deluxe line... The kids were there and into it, and there is a collector-base that could have supported a limited IJ line in "dry years" when there's no media to support.
The problem is this...
The IJ film did well at the box-office but it didn't have staying power for the whole year like a Star Wars film has, or whatnot. Staying power pushed the Revenge of teh Sith toy line beyond Christmas into the next year. That's a popular media outlet... Star Wars went through some leaner times like the post-Episode 1 and 2 days... Those holiday seasons were rough, and Hasbro realized they had to reshift their focuses to the "core" collectors.
Back to IJ though, the IJ film just didn't have that "umph"... Add in that there's not guarantee (or even likelihood) that there will be more media in the future... Kids didn't have things to "look forward to" for this property, even if they did like the IJ line... And I think they did at first, but like so much else in the Boy's Toys aisle, IJ became another summer blockbuster, flash-in-the-pan toy line that Hasbro couldn't salvage...
And Hasbro couldn't salvage it because they and purchasers made big mistakes. Hasbro's case-packs have been nothing short of horrendous, and purchasers obviously thought they could keep selling the same figures for months on end with little "new" product mixed in.
Hasbro had big plans, and that's cool, but a lot of factors contributed to this line's demise... Hasbro's case packs, retail's over-zealous purchasing, a film that lost steam before the summer was out, competition in the aisles, and nothing "on the horizon" to keep the juggernaught going in the leaner times. The last of which, having that film on the horizon, is a major thing to keep the interest alive in kids or collectors.
It's a shame too, as this line's got potential... It can't be Star Wars in terms of scale/scope, but it could've been a nice little line they could've milked for a while had some things fallen into place properly.
To me, I'm glad we got what we did... Some of it is great fodder for 1:18 military, some of it is great customizing bits for Star Wars, and while the line will be forever incomplete to me, it still delivered some really great modern Indy figures... It'll always be a line short of greatness is all.

Just think about all the different choices a child has in the toy section. The last thing I would want is a Arab swordsman or Monkeyman when I could get 1 of hundreds of different Star Wars figures, Transformers, GI Joe, Superheros and more. I agree the attention span has alot to do with it along with if the Movie/TV show is still playing.

I finally found some of the Grail Knights last night, mixed in with the new Indys and young Indys. Unfortunately no Vogels, Elsas or Dr. Jones. A new Target did have all they new five figure sets including the "tank battle" but I passed as the figures didn't appear to have all the accessories that the carded figures have. Plus, this Target had about 150 of these sets on the top shelf. I am pretty sure these will be on clearance sometime soon!

Sorry Razor, my $400 phone has the world's worst camera on it. There were two Target exclusive sets they had. "Tank Battle" (?) had Vogel, the two German soldiers battling it out with Indy and Professor Jones on top of a cardboard tank form. Five figures for $21.99, but they did not have all the accessories of the carded figures. No hat or umbrella for the Prof. The other set was the Cairo battle scene with Indy, Marion, the black robed assassin guy and the two white robed baddies. Like I said, they had hundreds of them so I am waiting for clearnace, or to find the carded Vogels.Razor17019 wrote:What is this "Tank Battle" set?olifant wrote:A new Target did have all they new five figure sets including the "tank battle" but I passed as the figures didn't appear to have all the accessories that the carded figures have. I've seen some "commerative" Indy sets at a local Wal Mart. These were for Crystal Skull and contained all previously released figures. In a way, it seems the sets are a creative method by Hasbro to unload all those KOTCS figures they probably have backlogged. Both sets had an Indy and Mutt figure and differed only in that one set had Col Dovchenko and the other Irina Spalko. Carded versions of all the figures were hanging on the pegs above.
At a local Target I also found the new truck with the canvas top. I think I am going to stick with my S1 truck for the moment as the plastic canvas actually looks a bit better...
