Need help with P-38

Post by INTREPER » Wed May 18, 2005 11:41 pm

I finally got my Putt Putt Maru in and couldn't want to put it together. What an amazing model.

I only ran into one problem. The landing gear doors will not stay in the open position when the landing gear is out. Is this a normal issue on this model? I searched the site but didn't find any info about the problem. Got any god ideas? Im all ears.

TIA,
JR

That is a normal feature for the 21c P-38 - my s1 version that I got a few years ago has the same problem, but it never really bothered me. The door for the nose gear should hang down correctly, but the doors for the two aft landing gear hang down against the strut. This is due to the fact that on the actual aircraft, hydraulic pushrods would hold the doors out, while such a feature would be difficult to replicate on a model.

Depending on how you ultimately plan to display the P-38 (I have mine hanging from the ceiling in all its glory) you could make some sort of brace using wire, plastic, or wood to wedge up in between the doors to hold them open. That should be practically invisible, save if viewed from the underside.

Did you also figure out the trick behind retracting the nose gear? As you know, it locks when extended - you have to push it inwards with a little bit of force and then it will retract back into the bay.

Hope this all helps!
