Is the new BBI 109 painted wrong?

Post by pickelhaube » Mon Sep 08, 2008 4:40 pm

I got my BBI 109s on Sunday and they look great. I have German Aces of North Africa and the Med. They have this same plane on a color plate. The pilot is Franz Schiess I know that a lot of the 109s had a yellow chin. But the black "1" they have pictured does not have the yellow chin and it has a yellow rudder. Mine has a sky blue rudder is this right? Shouldn't it be yellow or white ? I know that a lot of aces had several planes. The star of Africa had less than a dozen. Does anybody have a pic of this BBI livery?

Honestly, after looking thru most of my reference pics and profiles, I couldn't say one way or the other, but the light blue rudder would be unusual. Most of the planes I have looked at either have dark yellow rudders (sames as fuselage color), yellow or red rudders. The undersides of the cowl are either light blue or yellow.
The bad thing about profiles is you are looking at someone else's interpretation of what they think it looks like and they are rarely spot on accurate. Probably the only way to verify which is correct is to find a pic of that aircraft at the time it was supposedly that scheme and see if they match.

it's nearly impossible to prove or disprove most schemes, especially trim colours on those schemes, given the variance of old b/w wwii era photos. There were so many factors effecting the way various shades appear in the photo, from film quality, lighting, photographer, how developed etc etc.

I don't know how many times i've read 'definitive' descriptions of colour schemes, marking styles etc only to have them proven wrong a few years later by some new evidence unearthed....and then had those disproven again a few years later.

To be able to distinguish yellow, from blue, or for that matter light green, light brown etc in an old b/w photo is extremely difficult and only guesses can be made. My hunch is that the rudder should be yellow. But i've had lots of hunches proven wrong; so blue is as plausible a choice as yellow in my books.
i never met an airplane i didn't like...

Just like what every one else has said it’s hard to tell….even the books I have are not clear in what color rudder should be,,,,

Those aces books have had many, let's say, "problems" with a lot of their profiles. I would use them as a main source with a grain of salt (as any other).

I've always noticed that yellow looks very dark in many black and white photos of the era by the way.
