Anyway, a month or so ago i dug this thing out of its cardboard box tomb, figuring I'd give it another go, and this time I'd do it right. I have not completed it yet, but I have nearly finished the fabrication stage of the custom, having already stripped my previous attempt at painting, and kit-bashing in pieces from an FOV Stug III. Now all that is left is fabricating the smoke dischargers (today's task), epoxying some seams, and filing in a few holes in the hull that came from removing pieces. O, and there is drilling out a hole in the gun housing so that the barrel can be inserted, a task I have been excited about and dreading at the same time. That part was by far the hardest to create and I see it that I've only got one chance at it, b/c if I mess it up I will probably wait a while before I give it another go.
But enough ranting, here are some pictures of my progress thus far, with an unchanged 21st Panzer III ausf. F (I think that's what it's supposed to be) for comparison.
First is a comparison picture without any of the extras on it. You can see the new drive sprocket and rear idler for FOV, along with the tracks. Also note the new drivers vision port and hull mg.

Another comparison shot, a better view of the front this time.

Some of the new pieces. This pic shows the gun mantle and gun housing in front, along with the 2-piece barrel, and the customized monogram turret stowage bin. The panzer III itself has the front hull superstructure supplemental spaced armor, and the engine deck vent covers, and you can kind of see where I added the extra road wheels on top of the rear track guard.

Same as above, just at a different angle. You can see the other extra road wheel as well. Also note the sanding down of the turret side's vision ports.

Detail of the gun and mantle assembly. Still needs a gunners site vision port on the mantle, along with an mg inside the mg housing. This is the step that scares me, putting these two together...

Detail of the stowage bin. Note the added .02" styrene to the back of the bin. This was salvaged from a dilapidated monogram pz IV.

Up-close shot of the supplemental armor in place. doesn't quite fit as snug as I'd like, but a little sanding will fix that.

Detail of the engine deck vent covers. They were made from .118" styrene, heavily cut and sanded. I also hade to make the existing 2-piece engine deck doors into 1-piece doors so that I could still open them after I put on the covers, plus that is how it was IRL.

Another shot of the gun mantle/housing and barrel assembly

A preview of what it will look like after I get the courage to drill that 1/4" hole.

Rear idler from FOV stug III

And finally, a view of the turret top, with things both removed and added.

I'll update everyone again as soon as I make some more substantial progress.
