FW190 D9
How long have the 21st Century FW190 D9's been discontinued and what would be a fair price for one NIB?

The plane was produced starting in 2004. I can't really say when it was discontinued, but Wal Mart sold them into 2005-2006, as did the small retailers. It remains as one of 21c's flops, so much so that they had to offer a contest just to get people to buy up the planes then gathering dust on Wal Mart shelves. My how times have changed...
I would say between $40 and $60 is a good starting price for a boxed plane. You will certainly sell it at that price. However, you might also want to check on ebay and see what they are going for. That is sometimes an indication of how to price an item...

Well, I checked the internet high and low and could not find any (at least 1:18 scale) available from any of the resellers. There is one for sale on ebay (buy now) for $149.95. So what were the contributing factors (poor quality, lack of interest, etc.) why this paticular model is (or was) considered a flop?

The FW-190D was considered a flop because it sold very poorly in the long run. Most Wal Marts did not get stacks of them, but usually got about 8-10. These sat around for the most part and were not discounted. This occurred back in the days when Wal Mart was very chancy about discounting the 21c items, so some planes sat on shelves for two years at full price. A local hobbystore in my area also got in a bunch of the FW-190s, which did not sell well either.
Sales of the FW-190D9 were so poor at mass retail that 21c initiated the "4 for Victory" contest, which encouraged collectors to buy up four FW-190s from Wal Mart, then send in the receipts. Eventually, the people that participated received an exclusive repaint of the retooled P-51D, "The Tender Terror."
Personally, I like the FW-190D-9 and have three of the five repaints. It was a shame the plane sold poorly and later, Wal Mart learned to discount all the unsold 1:18 planes after a few months instead of years. Then, the retailer decided it was best to simply cancel sales of all large 1:18 aircraft and armor...

I think the one you mention is a Europe-only release that didn't see distribution in the states. I agree with Tman that $40-60 is a fair range.klaussito wrote:tmanthegreat wrote:The plane was produced starting in 2004. Recently most of the 190's have exceeded $100, in bidding wars. Go figure? Other than the rare European exclusive mentioned, the most popular and highest priced one I think is the Michaelski Flight Leader.
I'm missing a couple, so I have been watching a few, and they always go too high. I remember Walmart blowing them out for $25 a piece, so I bought the Michaelski and Red 3, because by then I could only find two with the boxes halfway decent. Funny now though it matters a little, but people don't care what shape the box is in, as long as the plane is intact.
