What is next ? Pre start A7V & Maus Pics added 3-5-08
Ok Guys the 2 planes I have up are going well and may someday get finished. I do like to dream and look towards the future. I think that I will do an armor project next. I have started on a couple of projects and have put them on the back shelf. My New Years resolution is working so far and it was try to finish all the projects I have started already. I have ask this before but the light is at the end of the tunnel on my 2 planes and I want to put all of my ducks in a row.
What ON MY LIST would you like to see next?
1. A7V . Started body roughed in.
2. Maus . Turret started.
3. Hetzer . Paper plans only.
4. Marder III. Paper plans only but I do have quite a few Pac-40s.
Or should I just stick to planes?

Hey Pickelhaube,
I talked to our Mentor tonight, (you know-the pro builder that me,you and Gary, have been copying his work-----the guy with the Freaked out starwars snow plow with panther wheels and moon rock gear shifter that has his personal signature on the bottom----Sh?t on the wall - by - who threw it-- He told me that he would finish both your planes, build my hetzer and have everything ready and finished in about a hour, He also said the only problem he might have is fitting the 1/32 props to 1/18 planes, but no need to worry he did not think anyone would notice because no one has said anything about the 1/32 mantlet on his 1/18 snowplow panther-----so what do you think-----Go ahead with our deal or let him finsh everything

It would be easier to let him finish but I am not sure how it would look. I am sure that he gets his scale prints from a child in kidergarden.thehun wrote:Hey Pickelhaube,

It looks like the Mause wins being the my next armor project. This was Gemany's biggest tank of WW2 . Only 2 were built . They were both damaged before the end of the war. There is a debate if they saw active servive or not. At the end of the war the Russians found them and they used the body of one and the turret of another and put them together. it is now in a Russian museum somewere. The Germans made another super giant and there are several British pictures showing about 4 of there super heavy turrets in production. I think this was the E-100.
I will try to post some pics of the 1/18 turret of my Mause in a day or so.

PH, couple of questions for you:
1) Is that UHMW you are using for the Maus body?
2) What brand is your 1/35 A7V?
Thanks! These look great.

Thanks guys for the kind words.
Olifant,
The 1/35 A7V I won off of e-bay years ago. The guy did a real good job on it and I won it for a reasonable price. When I do a project I like to get a scale model kit on the subject and if I can I also like to get a built model as well. I guess that I could build the model myself but that is just more work for me to do. The model is a 1/35 Touro kit.
I am sorry but I do not know what UHMW is. The Mause's turret so far is made out of 1/8 inch black styreen that I won off of e-bay ( I won 30 pcs I was going to do a 1/6 scale !) and the front mantlet of the turret is made out of 4 inch PVC pipe. I will make the gun base out of the same. The wheels and tracks will have to be scratch built but they are so big that this should not be that hard.
I have talked to Zelda about maybe doing a Elaphant rather than the Mause. His thoughts are that this subject could appeal to more people than the Mause. What do you all think? I also think that if I use the 21st Tiger 1 track , the way they made it that it looks real close to the Elaphant. I just need to thin it out in the middle to give it that hour glass shape to the cleats any comments on this?

Thanks PH. UHMW stands for Ultra High Molecular Weight. I am not sure what the base material is but it is extremely dense, slightly waxy in feel and often used in material handling when product comes into contact with racks or rollers as it won't scratch or marr anything.
Not a bad material to use as it is easily cut or formed, it is just rather spendy.

i've built a 1/18 elephant (actually ferdinand) from a scaled up paper model kit. Looks quite impressive in 1/18...bigger than i expected. I think it would be an excellent choice for you to make BUT i think you should do the Maus as well as it will be spectacular. I have a paper model kit of a Maus as well i plan to build some day. One thing that has stopped me is i haven't got a clue as to what to use for track for it. I was thinking of splicing 2 tiger tank tracks together (side by side) but that wouldn't look great...unless i really muddied them up to hide the seam. Even then they aren't wide enough. I suppose i could use tracks from the upcoming KT but that is a pretty expensive way to go as i'd need to buy 2 KT's just for the tracks. Any ideas?

It has been awhile since I worked on the Maus. But I had the same idea about bashing the 21st tracks. But the links are so big on the Maus that I thought that could actualy make a master link mold and cast it make dupes mold and cast them until I have enough. If memory does not escape me they look just like gigantic KT tracks. Maybe 1 1/2 inches wide. I need to check that.aferguson wrote:i've built a 1/18 elephant (actually ferdinand) from a scaled up paper model kit. Looks quite impressive in 1/18...bigger than i expected. The Ferdenan/ Elaphant looks real close to the Tiger 1 tracks form 21st. But the cleat thins in the middle giving somewhat of an hour glass shape.
Wasnt the maus's turret as heavy as a tiger tank? Also anyone know where i can get these paper model kits? Ive never heard of them before

I am not sure about the weight of the Maus's turret but I do know that most of the paper models are from Poland. I have a few of these myself . An A7V, Brtish WW1 Mk IV and a Mig -3. I think that they are all in 1/20 scale. I won them all off of E-bay. If you want go to e-bay type in paper model and find the name of the manufactoer Gogal that and you can find the source. I did just that and they have hundreds of em ! You can take them to Kinkos and have them enlarged to 1/18 and there you go. I think that Aferguson may have done just that. He has been doing the paper for sometime now. This is an easy way to get a 1/18 subject if you can't wait to get it . If ever.
