POST TOY SHOW DISCUSSION AND FINDS HERE

Post by aferguson » Sat Feb 16, 2008 1:42 pm

Toy Fair is starting. Though i'm not expecting much, it still makes sense to keep the discussion in one place, rather than having it spread over many threads and forums.

Keep it to 1/18-ish please (1/16 is fine). Off topic, is fine too (eg Indiana Jones, Star Wars), as long as to scale.

Let the games begin..

Wow! Alot of great figures. The vehicles look good as well, especially the motorcycle and the truck. I'm a little less impressed with the German staff car, which looks a little plain and dorky with that missile launcher. The truck, however, is very cool and will look good with my XD Germans

That missile launcher shouldn't be a problem to remove, so that staff car will be a welcome addition for my German High Command...

The truck looks very similar to the Kenner version I have on my desk.
Little more detail on this new version- hurrah!

A few nice things I will add to my collection, but honestly they have way too much stuff...too many lines and dull characters. I'm sure every kid will be running to the toy section to grab a Cairo Swordsman....Not. Indiana Jones toys never had legs and I don't see it happening now.

3 3/4" figure line, 12" line, Little Hero Line, Die Cast line, Mr Potato head line... and not to mention Sideshow is also doing the 12" line as well.

Unfortrunately, it looks like the motorcyle (for now, at least) is one of the miniature Titanium series die-cast vehicles.

There is a 3 3/4" German soldier standing next to a motorcycle and the caption reads: "German soldier with motorcycle w/ sidecar" even though there is not sidecar in the pic.
Guess we will have to see...

Can't wait for the Indy line. Will definitely pick and choose, but there is definitely some great stuff. The German motorcycle, the German cargo truck, Russian soldiers - yep, good stuff.

The truck appears to be Mercedes Benz LO2750 or at least a re-make of one.

The wheels and chassis appear to be different which is leading some to believe it may have been put onto a GMC chassis? Thought it worth mentioning for those that plan to mod it to look like the real deal.

Big debate on it over here:

Cool. If I remember the truck was pretty underscale, but I figure anything new in 1/18th is good news. The jungle cutter could work nicely as the base for a custom. Hmmm...

jungle cutter= custom what? i can't think of anything.

The truck will probably be underscale....but there were so many different sizes of trucks, all looking pretty similar, i figure it can easily be a generic, medium sized german truck. Painted grey, 3 colour, desert....will work for every theatre.

I can't think of anything it could be customized into either. What I can see is me buying it in a lull between releases telling myself I will turn it into something! :D

The original prop was indeed on a GMC truck... So that part's right. ;) Good eyes.

A few things of note...

-I wouldn't judge paint aps and things too harshly... They tend to not have much that looks like the final product at Toy Fair. Most are paint masters and are hand-painted prototypes, not much more. They showed a Starfighter in the SW line that's uber clean as well and people figure it won't be when you buy it.

-The truck is nowhere near as small as the original Kenner truck, which isn't exactly dinky... A quick eyeballing of it shows the driver's cab is substantially larger, as it's made to accomodate the new figures, whereas the original Indy figures were a hair small and sat in an awkward fashion... By all photos of the actual toy on display, not from the slideshow, the truck is pretty big and seems at the very least very close to accurate, if not spot-on.

-The cannon on the German car is lame... :)

-The German Cycle is very likely to see multiple releases... It was featured in two films, with and without sidecar, and will likely be released with and without it. With the German Trooper, the bike was used without a sidecar... So I am not counting on that version of it coming with a sc unless they do it as a courtesy. I do, however, expect we'll see the bike released again in similar colors with a sidecar and Indy w/his father Henry (Sean Connery) in the sc.

Also, the bikes were in Raiders as well in desert tan with a machine gunner in the sidecar, so we could see that released at some point as well. Keep in mind they do hold some stuff back, plus exclusives and things, so you never know.

Hasbro's putting a TON into the Indy line, and it's being run by the Star Wars crew for the most part so it's got an experienced group... They wholely plan onthe line existing for a while, and I believe are really hoping for a strong "adult collector" core and kids to get into it through the new film (which looks pretty good actually by the first trailer, but don't all movies?).

Will kids run out and buy Sallah or the Cairo Swordsman? No... But they ran out and bought Clones, Jedi, and more, so Hasbro's doing as they always do and catering partially to collectors, and partially to the kiddies (whipping action Indy, etc.), and I'm sure they'll be able to keep the line afloat for a time. Especially if they're almost tying it to the Star Wars line in a way... Which I think they are. They've been pretty successful so far, so it'll be interesting to see how the Indy launch goes.

I for one cannot wait for this stuff... It's been years since I had Indy toys, and really this is a line I've pondered now for a while. It's weird but for some reason Star Wars and Indy fans seem to be one in the same, so this is a big thing right now amongst that group. :)

The King Tiger and 88 look great and look forward to adding them to my collection, but is this all the new stuff to show at the Toy Show this year (from any of the companies?) If so, it's not lookng good for 1:18 scale military. Was hoping to see more from any company, not just 21st. On the plus side, leaves more money for the Indiana Jones line! (Didnt TKO say we would have somebody at the Toy show reporting and taking pics? Sure would like to know if this is it, so I dont keep checking back at all the sites for nothing  )

Andy, the combination of limited product and secrecy from most of the players meant there was not much to see. Dragon was not at the show. Merit (bbi) was not at the show. Unimax (forces of valor) was not showing Bravo Team as it is still Target exclusive.

I had said in the long discussion about the future of 1:18 that we really have to expect less in our scale. The companies are not much bigger than what they were, but now they're doing 1:32 (PHANTOM), 1:48 (TONY), 1:144 (P-47), etc...

21C had a ton of cool stuff and new schemes in the smaller scales.

After the flak and KT, my favorite 1:18 item was the sitting .30 cal machine gunner. He is long overdue. There was also a popular AC that looks like it is coming back via special editions packaging.

I sent a bunch of photos to Zach and have some more. I must admit my camera work was not the best but I think I got a pic of everything.

If you are checking the Board constantly waiting to see that unannounced new piece of armor, no need to.

Thanks for the update Digger. Was hoping that at least one of the companies would show something new. I kept thinking that one of them said they would be showing something, but alas, it is not to be. :-( Appreciate your news an efforts though and look forward to the pics! :D

Digger,
Really appreciate your effort on this. You are truely one of the BEST!

Was there a big crowd there when you went?
Did you get any freebies?
Besides the big 3 or 4 MFGs that we look at on the board, how many other companies were represented at this Toy Fair?
