planting a plane in the yard so to speak(wind sock)

Any one ever thought of taking a 1/18th plane that may not be so good any more and making a wind socky thing out of it?I.E mounting it on a pole with a pivot point some how built into the plane like a normal wind indicator.Do you think this would work?or is the plane to heavy or just a dumb idea? Any ideas you great people might have would be great! as always thank you Kim

That's a very interesting idea. Could sort of make a weather vane out of it. I wonder if it would work, or if it is too heavy or wouldn't point properly. Hmm..

Cool idea! I think it would work as long as you find the planes center of gravity and locate the pivot point there. I may have to try my hand at one of these....... I'll keep you posted.

I have thought about that too,it should work,the props on xd planes certainly spin well in the wind.I just wonder how long it would last in the elements,the plastic would probably break down and crumble,especially here in NZ near the hole in the ozone layer,we have not a lot of protection from the sun.!! Next time you use a CFC powered spray think of us poor Kiwis,hehe.

I used the nasty old P-51 outdoors.
I hung it on monofilament, but it didn't work to well.
I have it down to re-design.
I covered it in adhesive tin foil, that seems to protect it pretty well.

even if it doesn't work well it would still look good on the top of a house, as a weather vane. Just point it west...the wind is usually from the west anyway.

17/35 here, and we get 40/50 mph winds quite often.
