New project - just in the playing stage

Post by General Blasto » Sun Nov 25, 2007 8:33 am

I decided to go forth and start my crazy project
A piece of armour that almost every WWII person has to have ;) We have had a thread running now in the 1 18th forum on this flak tank and I deceided to go ahead and try to build one :) So for right now, I'm in the "playing" stage, that is, playin' around with the idea of what I can use to build this beastie. The vehicle in question is the Whirblwind Flak tank. So for now, I am playing with a cheap PTE quad gun mount and some aluminium and brass piping. Brace yourself, it's not that pretty

I am calculating the lenght of the barrels and am figuring out what will work best. The Capt. told me to go out and buy a 1/35th model of the tank to get my measurements for the turret. I'm hoping that someone has a 1/35th scale model and send me the measurements one ONE panel, both top and bottom section please ;) THen I can make a jig or two and start cutting out pieces from styrene. I found here on the web that the shape of the 9 sided turret is a NONAGON and here is roughly a drawing of it.

I know much work needs to be done on the Flak gun assembly. A good referance picture would be nice (hint, hint). But as I said, it's a first step and seeing is better than talking :P

Another shot of the gun assembly in production. Hey, I could wait for 21st to make this, but then again I could wait for the 88 gun too - WAIT, I'm waiting for the 88 gun as are many of us  Anyway, I needed a good project that I could do a build log on and perhaps, if this turns out nice, maybe some of you may want to build one and this build log would be the ticket for the info and pictures to be used as a guide  So, if anyone has a 1/35 or 1/32 scale model of a Whirblwind, could you please measure one of the plates - top, sides and bottom of the upper and lower plates on that turret for this build log please :?: THanks in advance from myself and others who may wish to use this build log to build a Whirblwind 8) Herr General

Looks like a good start. Funny how it's easier to start a project with something to glom things onto.. and you're right, it'd be nice if 21C put this one out the door but that may be years, if it ever happens so what the hell right? ;)
