Apache Down!

Well...not exactly. It just looks like a nasty crash. Actually, it looks like a helicopter factory hurled on my desk. This is just the beginning of the madness!!! This mess is going to (soon I hope) turn into an IDF Longbow. The first stage is disassemble (sorry Johnny 5). I've already begun removing all the junk attached that won't make it to the final product. A few curious things I found along the way. Inside the right fuselage half....there's a mirror application of the "US Army" along and just behind the engines. Why....? No idea! I have screw caps in about half the screw holes....just made it easier not to have to remove them. The extreme nose is glued together while everything else is held by the screws. Go figure!?!? I'll go over the mods later...but for now, all small children and the weak of stomach should look away.....TADA....naked Apache....and notice the gratuitous view of SSHQ on the monitor?

Very cool... I will be watching your progress. Love those Longbows!

As for the glue in the nose of the Apache, the Blackhawk is put together the exact same way, to include more glue in the extreme tail section. It makes disassembly a bit tedious at times. My guess is that there isn't enough surface area or depth to mold in screw holes in these areas.

Looking forward to seeing your finished Longbow!

I couldnt get the tail section off of mine no matter how hard i pulled. I wanted to do an IDF but I just havent been able to get into it:( good luck and I cant wait to see it!!

try not to pull the tail section, but to bend it verticaly right on the "body-tail-section-clip" (softly hey don't break it!). it is the easiest way I found to put it back in its box every time I play with it.

(is it easy to understand ?)

Sorry Ski....but no, it's the BBI 1/18th scale Apache. The one you are looking at is the 1/32nd scale FOV Apache.

Maybe I better state that a little clearer. I am reworking the BBI Apache that is twice the size of the one you have. The markings should be easier for you to duplicate, but some of the mods might be difficult. The BBI Apache is all plastic whereas the FOV Apache is diecast metal....not easy to work with sometimes. I'll give you all the help I can, but I need to know if you have the "A" model or later and exactly what mods you might be interested in. We can discuss the particulars when you know what you'd like to do.

Man thats gonna look so freakin cool!! I have an IDF decal set from a smaller model of the Apache, I was looking in to enlarging it on my printer but I dont really know squat about doing that stuff. Let me know if you need them.

You Bet!!! The side pods are sanded, but not yet primed. Antenna locations have been marked and the mounts along the upper spine between the exhausts is coming along nicely. The air data probes have just been started and the radar dome is about the last major piece I haven't really done anything with yet. The cockpit detail is also just starting and is being ramped up ALOT from stock. No pictures right now...I'll get some for you soon.

where are you gonna get the decals from? Im about to send some to get resized but im waiting to get a 1/48 seahawk and send those decals in at the same time.

Not phased a bit....he did the AH-64A model used by the IDF for some years now....I'm doing the Longbow version with radome. And....he copied the picture so exact that he made the Hellfire missles baby blue....training missles(???).
All he did was repaint the original (all be it a very good paint job)...mine will be alot different.

I did pretty much the same thing he did but I kept the original weapons, finished painting it but Im waiting on the decals. It looks pretty nice hanging from the ceiling, really different from the original.

Two quick points -

Did you know the Apache D can be flown without the radar? I think it's the Royal Netherlands Air Force who are buying something like one radar for every five birds, but it might make life slightly easier to know you only really need to flip the mast instead of doing the whole stabilized mount thang.

The rotorhead in the picture link from the army-info website was actually a UH60 Blackhawk, not an Apache - the engine "pod" on the Apache is more squared and lower, and the particle seperator on the front is round unlike the cnoe-shaped bit marked 'No Step' in the pic.

That blackhawk rotorhead pic was for me.....I am doing a blackhawk project.

We both know what an Apache rotorhead looks like.

That blackhawk rotorhead pic was for me.....I am doing a blackhawk project.
