What happened to the 21st Kubelwagen????

Post by VMF115 » Mon Oct 01, 2007 5:13 pm

I am stating to get in to the darker side of 1:18th the ground vehicles and armor, and I like the Kubelwagen wagon a great deal, but I dont have one will 21st make another one? If so I would like to also see a Schwimmwagen..

I have a few questions
What kind of options did the kubel have?
Why have we not seen any more, was the mold considered to be out date?

The molds for the Kübel went up in smoke along with the rest of the factory a few years ago, and apparently it wasn't deemed significant enough to be recreated.

I gave up on finding 21c's sometime ago. However Unichamps in 1/18 can sometimes be found at prices, that might seem high, offer more model than toy for what you might pay on ebay for 21c. I have both the gray and spinach, and the quality is very much improved on 21c's offerings.

what kind of extra deatil would be good if 21st where to make another one. and what detail did the Unichamps version have that the 21st did not have. I hope we do get another one from 21st someday with more detail the the last one but I don't know what kind of deatil would make it better.

whats are thoughts?

I've no idea what kind of additional detail 21c might add if they were to redo the molds and make another one. I've also never seen a 21c kubel other then in photos. There is a database offered from one of the members here that should have photos from both firms. Look at them and decide, considering currant prices, which one is the best value.

I only know that when I was looking for 21c's, that Unichamps kubel at retail prices, vs 21c's at ebay prices, was way and beyond the best value.

I'm sorry, just what I get for going by memory, it should have been Minichamps.

Here's what I found on ebay. Which is right in line with what 21c's offering has also been going for, if found.

I think if 21st. ever decides to take the plunge $$$$$ here & re-tool another mold for it ,.. we could certainly use one w/ a "soft top" ! * 8) ....... even another manufacturer , for this matter.

Removable , ofcourse ! *

Well those Minichamps wagons are nice, but a bit on the spendy side, given the high price of the remaning 21st wagons I can see the price/detail advantage of the minichamps wagon.

As for the Kubelwagen it played an important part in the German war machine that I am surprised that 21st did not put a rush to rebuild the mold after the fire.

I would go with a minichamps version  Though i dont have one my uncle does and he showed it to me and it was awsome. Instead of plastic it was made of metal,it had actual rope on it, and more realistic. So if your thinking of getting a kubel get a minichamps version. The price may be high but it is worth it

I have the Minichamps Kubel in the link below and must say it’s far superior to the 21C version. However it’s like comparing apples to oranges. One is made to be a top notch display piece while the other is made to be playable. I would never use my Minichamps Kubel for a custom or anything like that. I would suggest if you have the spare cash picking one up. They are fantastic quality pieces and are getting harder and harder to find.

I don’t believe the top goes up but the detail on it is incredible. You won’t be disappointed in it that’s for sure.

I think you would be happier w/ the 21st. example myself. ... Just try putting a figure in the drivers seat of the Minichamps example and you'll know what I mean.

The Minichamps model is made strictly for display only ,.. as opposed to the 21st. model having more playability etc,..

Besides ,.. the 21st. kübel does'nt look like it just rolled off the assembly line either.

You might not be able to fit a figure in the Minichamps one but it doesn’t have that hard plastic, solid front axel and it looks like the real thing. You could always weather it if you want but after paying $80 bucks for it I bet you won’t want to. If you’re looking for a cheaper ride for your Germans then the 21C version is for you. They're also customizable. It’s always nice to have a few top notch models in you collection as well. That’s why I have the Minichamps Kübel.

Personally, I like the 21c Kubelwagon for the reasons MG-42 just mentioned. Both look good, however! It is still a little difficult to fit 1:18 figures into the 21c example, though, but they do fit

I had posted some pictures a while back of both the 21C and Minichamps.

Like everyone is saying the 21C is made to be played with and has less than accurate details on the underside.

Minichamps is metal and is for display only with lots of little bits and pieces.

....... but the Minichamps model does'nt have that collectability value added that the 21st. example does , considering it's rare + the molds were also destroyed associated w/ it.

I’m not sure I agree with that. It’s been my experience that both are equally collectable items. I have actually seen more 21C kubles on eBay than Minichamps kubels. I don’t think you can go wrong with either one. As a matter of fact if anyone sees another Minichamps one up for sale at a reasonable price let me know. I’m always looking for another good one.

I just received the Minichamps Kubelwagen and it is just awesome. I overuse that word but in this case it is true.

Wheels turn with steering wheel. Engine opens to a detailed engine. Detailed undercarriage. Even, real cord for the rope on the front deck. Canvas top is plastic and fixed in the down position but the rest of the vehicle is metal except the detailed wheels.

A great companion piece for the Gate Jeep, at 10 times the cost of what I paid for the Gate, but a super piece.

On the Minichamps box is the statement "This product is an accurate scale model and not a toy". Ain't that the truth.......

Now if Gate or Minichamps made more military stuff like this in 1/18, I'd be a confirmed collector of both.
