I have a HUGE (over 400) 1/18 diecast car collection. I want to add a good version of a WWII era military jeep to my collection. I know that I may have to settle for a plastic version instead of a diecast metal version.
Do you guys have any recommendations on a nicely detailed version?
I would prefer one with a machine gun mounted in the back.
Thanks,
Brian

Gates does a few diecast WWII jeeps. The ones I've seen are green with soft-top and a British SAS desert jeep with a couple machine guns and other detail parts. Looking on eBay now, I see there is a Beetle Bailey jeep does by Gates. That's news to me.
Anyways, they're a little on the cheap side, not as nice as say the Maisto diecast, but you can still find them in quanitity at KB liquidators.

Concerning 1:18 jeeps, I've always thought that the 1st series 21st Century XD Jeep is rather nice! Although its plastic, the level of detail is very good. The hood opens to reveal a detailed engine, the gas tank and folded soft-cover are under the driver and passenger seats respectively. It also has a removable gas can and tools as well as the all-important folding windshield and machine gun. These are rather hard to find, but your best chance outside of trading on this board is with ebay.
I wonder if the Gates SAS jeep is the same as the Solido SAS jeep?...i've only ever seen the Solido one..
Anyway, if you want specifically diecast there is Gates, Soldo and UT Models (which is Paul's Model Art). I'm not sure it the UT comes with a machine gun but it's probably your best bet for a diecast.
The XD version is pretty good. More fragile feeling than a diecast but probably has the finest detail and finess.

I personally like the Solido Jeeps the best. I have both the green soft top version and the SAS. They have steerable front wheels and opening hoods. The plastic top can be removed on the green jeep and a figure can be squeezed in with some finesse. 21st Jeep dose have a nicer overall look to it but it is light plastic.
