Houston Screenings: Downfall and Saints & Soldiers Scree

Post by Mr. Football » Wed Mar 02, 2005 10:20 pm

FYI for you war movie buffs, there are two great WWII flicks set to screen in Houston. The first, "The Downfall" (Der Untergang) is a German-film about Adolph Hitler and the final days of the Third Reich, it has received excellent reviews internationally. It is just now opening in the States on limited release. It'll screen on March 11th at the River Oaks Landmark Theatre (as well as Dallas).

The other is another limited release film that has had very good reviews, it's titled "Saints & Sinners". It opens on March 25th at Westchase Tinseltown.

I've seen the previews for "The Downfall" and I really want to see that! I wonder how it was being an actor playing Hitler. They did a good job with the makeup.

Downfall got an Academy Award Nomination for best foreign film, so it's probably pretty good..

Both look quite inviting. After BoB, it's hard to watch another movie of a similar subject without declaring bandwagen though.............

Band of Brothers certainly wasn't the first War Movie, it was a bandwagoner of Saving Private Ryan...but I know what your saying.

IMO it's too bad there haven't been more bandwagoners. :)

Downfall

Supposed to be excellent and not at all like BoB, SPR, or anything before it. The movie focuses on Hitler, and those around him in the final days of his life. The actor (I've read this in 3 places) does an amazing job playing Hitler, and many say the movie should have won best foreign film, but was eclipsed by A Sea Inside due to hollywood's political leanings on the subject of euthenasia :?.

Frankly, as much as understand the appreciation for BoB, and appreciate the realism, I think it's overrated and rather shallow. Don't kill me for that comment, but the shaking camera and the screaming gets old.....

I was strictly referring to the saints movie as far as the bandwagen thing. Downfall is a very original idea for a movie. I didn't think that BoB was shallow at all. It was pretty close to the book in all respects......

I think its a great theme for a movie as well. I remember seeing one of the many History Channel specials about the fall of Berlin and thinking that this would make a great film. Lots of chances for action, heroism, and especially drama. There's just something powerful about one man's dreams (evil and misguided though they certainly were) coming crashing down in fire and smoke.

I thought Anthony Hopkins made a pretty good Hitler.
