Holy Grail of 1:18 Aircraft

Post by MG-42 » Mon Sep 03, 2007 1:38 am

OK ,.. so what do you consider to be the Holy Grail of 1:18 Aircraft ?

I've compiled a list of what's considered to be "hard to find" & or ( rare ) , highly sought after 1:18 aeroplanes to be voted against.

If I've left any out , please remind me.

"You make the choice". ..............

I have to say the P-38 "Haleakala II".
Colonel "Madman" Maddox: Let me hear your guns!
Captain Wild Bill Kelso: My what?
Colonel "Madman" Maddox: Your guns! Ack, ack, ack, ack, ack!
Captain Wild Bill Kelso: [fires his airplane's guns] AHHHH!

My vote is for the "D-DAY" P-38... I think its one of the coolest looking planes, hell it even made the cover of Secret Weapons over Normandy. 8)

I voted the F/A-18. Just for shear size and retail cost. I bet either the B25 or F-4 will garner the top vote.....once and if they come out.

Hey MG 42,
Man this is a tough one. It is like saying what would I like better to stick a needle in my eye or a nail? I would rather not have to choose. The TT has got to be on the top for what it is. But it is NOT my favorite . That would be the Haleanka or the Gallan 109 ( not on the list). I have 2 of the Spinach 109s but in my opion it is not a very good looking plane. So do I go with the facts are or go with the heart? TT vs Haleanka ?
I guess it has to be the Tender T :?
You do not have the Bunny 51 on the list. I don't think it sold well but it is the best looking 51 on the market. Maybe some day it will hit collector status. I guess that will take about 2 years to do. Unless you are the White zero. That took only 4 months
Kirk Douglas : Mine hit the ground first
John Wayne : Mine was taller

I had to throw in a vote on the Haleakala II--it was one of my first WWII XD planes (after the splinter green Stuka and Red 12 FW-190), and is still my favorite allied plane.

It's a bit unfair on the modern stuff, innit?

I mean, there's two HueyCobras (Snake and USMC Gray), several Hueys (several 1st Cav, Air America), the F104 Starfighters, the Hornet and Falcon, a couple of Kiowa Scouts and the Loach/Little Birds, the BlackHawk, PaveHawk and Apache and they all get lumped under ONE vote? :? :?

Still, at least you didn't ask what people thought should be made... I don't think a Poll is allowed to have that many choices, is it?

I'd have to say since the Holy Grail is pretty much unattainable I'd probably vote for any of the prototypes or 1 of's.. :P

Without a doubt the Desert Scheme 109 protoype is the Holy Grail(in my humble opionion), I remember that one because I was indirectly involved with letting them(21C) know they accidently shipped it out.

So the Desert 109 prototype was the only one ever made? This one is especially interesting to me due to my North African focus. What's the story?

Ok, here goes the story as best I remember because this all happened around 2000/2001 so it's been a while. Back in the day when 21C had a fanclub you could join and a board you could post to, they had a fanclub exclusive aircraft which was the S2 "Spinach" 109. On their board there was a thread about the new Spinach 109 and a guy named Todd (I think) mentioned he had ordered a Spinach one but got this desert paint schemed 109 and asked if anybody else had gotten one, well no one else had. I called the 21C fanclub number and spoke with a very nice lady whose name escapes me(maybe one of you old timers like me can remember her name) because I called her a few days ago to order a pair of the Spinach 109's and wanted to make sure I got the Spinach ones and not the Desert Camo ones(boy was I stupid). When I made the request to her about not getting the desert schemed plane there was a moment of silence and then she spoke in this freaked out horrifed voice asking me how did I know about the desert schemed 109. I calmly replied because some fanclub member had received one, and he posted a question about it on their fanclub board. She told me that was a paint prototype that had been missing for a few days and they had turned the office upside down looking for it. She said it must have accidently been shipped out and did I know the person who got it. I said I only knew their board name. She thanked me and hung up.

Wow. Pretty wild. Has this prototype been seen or heard from since? Any speculation as to why the scheme was never released? After all the research had been done, it couldn't have been too difficult to make another pre-production sample.

The desert scheme prototype is 1 of 3. It sold on ebay a couple years ago for $560... 21st still has the other 2.

Very cool. Thank you for the background story. Now all I need to do is infiltrate 21C headquarters and liberate the other 2.

Hey VMF214,

I remember it selling on ebay and always wondered if a 21C agent was told to buy that back at any cost. Maybe TKO can do some digging around at 21C and see if they got their prodigal prototype back

Although I love the modern jets from BBi, the 21st Spitfire is one bird that is extrememly well made. nothing about it seems "cheap"....clean lines, solid feel and beautiful paint job. It's at the top of my list.
