ARVN M41 (dial-up user caution, large images!)

Post by Spudkopf » Thu Aug 23, 2007 8:59 pm

G’day All

Thanks to efforts of both FieroDude (for the M41) and Razor17019 (for the crew), I have been able to get my ARVN M41 project underway and following are some initial project progress images.

Image

As you can see I have removed all the US markings and replaced these with an ARVN style yellow and black number plate, I have also relocated the tool carrier to the right hand fender (this may however require some position tweaking). Talking about the fenders I did initially toy with the idea of cutting these at 45°, however after finding several images of ARVN vehicles with straight cut fenders I decided to take the easier option of leaving them as is and as such I have given the vehicle a lower serial number to hopefully reflect this.

Image

Two tow rings have been added to the front glacises plate and as is the ARVN style a length of wood has been inserted to create a storage/anti-RPG shield area.

Two whip antennas have been added to the antenna stubs on the turret roof, one of which is now proudly flying the former South Vietnamese flag.

All the vision ports have been blacked out to represent class (apart from those around the TC cupola these were originally all unpainted).

The whole vehicle has been given a very dusty appearance, before it all turns to mud when the monsoons come.

What is still to do…..

Well I am now desperate to find some more BBI 50 and 30 cal ammo boxes/cans (the ones that come with the Sherman) basically as many as I can get hold of, as the ARVN Bull Dogs were covered in the buggers and I’d prefer to stick with the BBI ones for the sake of continuity, the head lights will need to be put back in and I may add the steps to the turret sides but only if I feel up to it.

I'd also like to add the canvas mantle cover but this may be asking a bit much.

I hope to also get back to working on the Huey this weekend and I also have a CIP project update that I need to post as well, that's if I can find the time.

Enjoy.....
SPUD

G'day Razor.

No big secret or extra special effects here, the flag is an accurate scaled flag (wikipedia as the necessary proportion listed) and the red stipes where just printed onto standard yellow paper (my office just got a colour printer yesterday and the media tray dedicated the fax's has yellow paper in it).

The flag was printed with a left and right half that was then folded over and glued over the antenna aerial. I then just put a few subtle bends in it to give it some perceived animation.

Great work Spud! :D This is how the original 21C one should have come out instead of just throwing an airborne trooper body in with a Viet Cong head. :P

The sunglasses on the "undercover" CIA driver probably aren't working as well as he would like though.. ;)

Agree with Razor on the flag and antennae, great touches! :)

Paint and weathering are very well done. The original was a very shiny green. I love the black rubber treading too. 8)

Nice work Spud, I've always liked the M41 and yours looks sweet. Regarding the mantlet cover.... you might want to try some crepe paper...the kind you would find at art supply stores and the like, it's easy to work with, and has a crinkly texture to it that should work well for your purposes, and with a bit of luck you may even be able to find a color that would be suitable without the need to paint or stain it. Good luck on the project.

From the images that I could find, unlike the m48 that has long antenna whips (I assume they are like those found on the M113 and made of fibreglass) the M41 appears to have rather short ones (which I assume are of a metal construction).

The whips themselves are made of thin wire that was glued into a small aluminium tube which was then glued into the antenna stubs, the three part construction was used as I did not have a drill as small as the wire gauge. The paint used was Gunze H80 Khaki Green, it was simply just brushed on once the antenna whips were in place, seeing that it was then weathered the match was not so important.

The US markings where all rubbed back and the holes from the tool box filled and sanded as was the join for the front glacises plate.

I used a can of Tamiya TS-5 Olive Drab to then repaint these surfaces as I was far to lazy to break out the air brush. It is a fairly close match but not as close as I would usually strive but as I intended to heavily the vehicle this was not such a big concern. Also this Tamiya paint has a semi-gloss scene to it which required a couple of coats of Gunze Mr Topcoat Flat to rectify.

OK/BD1

I had thought of using the above method for the canvas but I am actually thinking of using real fabric that looks remarkably like scaled canvas and which will allow the tube elevation/declination to continue to remain fully functional, while at the same time be extremely robust..

As with the turret ladder/steps, it just a matter of if I can be bothered or not to go to the extra effort, what usually happens is the tank will just sit there constantly mocking me until I get off my butt and finish the job.

G'day Blaster_e11

I went and had a look over at urbanrevtoys.com, but was unable to find a reference to any ammo cans there, would it be possible for you to post an image of the ones you got so I see if they would suit my needs.

Thanks
