Custom painted 1:18 Aircraft TKO UPDATED 1/02 F-14 Vandy 1
It was bound to happen sooner or later... The custom F-86 project! As you can see this old Mitch Squitch scheme is about to be become a Golden Hawks demonstration aircraft. These 4 photos are of some of the progress that I made last week. I am going to photograph the final result tonight and post that up sometime tomorrow. For now I thought you guys might enjoy seeing some of the steps involved.
1: In this photo I had already masked off the canopy and gun bay areas. I then had painted some of the detail parts like the nose and top of the tail. Then those areas were masked off and then a final primer coat was sprayed. At the point I had already designed and cut the vinyl mask for the large hawk graphics. I have applied this area over the top of a white painted field.
2: In this photo I have just sprayed the first coat of bright red paint over the vinyl mask.
3: Here I have finished painting the second coat of dull red and I have removed the extra masking tape from around the black vinyl stencil which protects the white color underneath and when peeled away will reveal the finished red and white hawk design.
4: In this photo the red paint had dried overnight and I had peeled away the vinyl stencil. With the famous hawks now painted and complete I had then masked these areas once again so that I could paint the overall gold color and then let it dry.
I didn't take any additional step by step photos so the next time you see this post you will see the final result. (sorry for the quick and dirty photos here. I was too focused on getting the project done.

Yeah, My little boy is HUGE into airliners and so we are in progress of building up our 1:400 scale airport and airliners. Delta happens to apparently be his favorite. That and the FedEx planes! LOL. They also make good 1:18 scale stands while paint dries.one-o-nine wrote:I see your also a fan of the new Delta livery.

I'm a big fan of the Canadian stuff myself. Just saw the restored Goldenhawks Sabre flying recently.
If I could provide a Sabre, would you be interested in making some bucks and doing one for me?

And just a note
The Goldenhawks Sabre I saw recently was one of the earlier models with the slats. Like the Admiral version.
Just a side note there.

I did a little research before I did my scheme. It appears that there were both the early version with slats and a later version without. The early versions had a large red GH on the tail. Later a number appeared on the tail much like the Thunderbirds and Blue Angels today. The last version only had the plain gold colored tail. There is a fourth scheme that has some sort of anniversary graphic on the tail. These details might be a little sketchy as I am not a Golden Hawks expert... But to the best of the knowledge available to me that is how I understand it. I did the scheme I wanted for me however it might not be 100% accurate to the later version sabre. Pics go up tomorrow and I am really happy with this one. Having a plane in Gold paint is very cool!
Ah! That makes sense. I thought that there was a 100 year design but I was not aware of the 50 year version. Cool!Killerf6 wrote:tko in 1959 the GH had 50 years on the tail to celebrate 50 years of Canadian flight.
You'll notice that Hawk One, the plane Coreyeagle posted pics of has 100 years on the tail. It will be flying around Canada this year to celebrate 100 years of Canadian flight.

After seeing Hawkone in person recently at an airshow that plane just looks fantastic! Very nicely done. I have an Admiral German Sabre here if you ever get the urge to paint another
Take Care Buddy!

The one shown is actually not mine. VMF put it up to confuse people.Coreyeagle48 wrote:Zach:

Mine is a little different and represents a newer version of the Golden Hawks. I am shooting it tonight and posting it up ASAP.
But yeah, you get the idea from seeing that other person's custom.

Ok- Here are the pics I took today of my Golden Hawks F-86. If anyone out there is a careful study of my final plane you will notice a couple things. 1. That the flag is missing from the tail section right above the word sabre. (this will be added at a later date through the use of a decal given the small size and multicolor complexity).
2. While my scheme and F model sabre are intended as a late model GH, the use of a tail number should actually not be used. Mine is inaccurate as I had fallen in love with the idea of it when I had referenced an inaccurate rendering that is nearly identical to the one I have made here. I just simply could not pass up the tail number.
In any event, I am very very happy with this custom and in person she is a real beauty. HEY- Any excuse to use gold spray paint makes this project a must for anyone bold enough to take it on. Who cares if people at the hobby store whisper in quiet tones saying "that guy just bought GOLD paint" - "what could that be for" -"who does he think he is? Elvis!" Don't be ashamed! Hold your head up high and shout it to all who will hear- I am painting a GOLD SABER today! It's all worth it in the end even if it's not as manly as purchasing some thing like Field Armor Gray or USAAF Olive Drab. The Golden Hawk is AWESOME when it's all done.
Enjoy the pics!

Very nice work tko. The other thing you're missing is the reg numbers under the word Sabre. (Just bustin' your spheres). Your skills are top notch.
You do know what gold paint is used for, don't you? It's the color of choice for paint huffers. That and little old ladies use it on flower pots. I think you need to take a pic of your work into the hobby store before they refuse to sell you anymore paint.
