New WWII Movie - Tali-Ihantala 1944

Post by grunt1 » Mon Jul 23, 2007 7:23 pm

Released on 12-7-2007 I think.. (European dates have the month and date switched from the way the U.S. does it)

They used a supposedly insane amount of original vehicles.

"Juonikuvaus

Appears to be a follow up to this 2004 film:

Looks sweet! Is it going to be released world wide? I hope so there hasn't been a good eastern front movie since Enemy At the Gates.

Thanks for the heads up on the Finnish movies Grunt. I ordered "Beyond Enemy Lines" recently, it's only available in PAL format (region 2) but that's not a problem for my player, many USA players will handle PAL format even if they don't advertise the fact, and the region coding can usually be "hacked" on most players. As for the "Tali Intahala" flick, I've not seen it for sale anywhere, but if you know of a source please let me know. As for "Eastern Front" movies, there is literally a treasure trove of DVD movies from Russia and the former Soviet Union available, sadly most are in Russian only, and without English subtitles, although there are a fair number that do have English subs and more are coming out all the time. The Russian flicks are really great, what they lack in special effects and hollywood glitz is more than made up for with gritty realism, and they are chock full of period vehicles, weapons, and equipment, both Soviet and German, as well as Lend Lease British and American stuff. These are not the kind of thing you will find at your local Blockbuster though, but there is some great stuff out there for those that are interested in something different than the usual hollywood offerings.

At the Gates, was crap

a Holly-hype of Stalingrad and the book War of the Rats.

Stalingrad(1993) and Stalingrad: Dogs, do you want to live forever(1958)

are better motion pictures of the conflict.

Stalingrad is pretty good....i didn't think the acting/dialogue was very good but that may be because i saw a dubbed version. Some good action scenes....i didn't think it was horrific enough though.

ostketten: which of the Russian movies would you recommend the most? I'd prefer one with english subtitles.

Hmmm...well, there are so many...but a couple of my favorites that come to mind are "On The Nameless Height" a story of a Soviet female sniper, "Kursanty" (Cadets) a story about Soviet officer cadets at the Saratov Artillery Academy who will be sent to the front, and almost certain death upon graduation, "Zvezda" (The Star) a story about a Red Army scout/recon squad operating behind German lines, very good action scenes and equipment, this one was originally without English subs, but I believe it can be found with subtitles now if you look hard enough, "Come and See", not one of my all time favorites but many people like the brutal scenes, like many Elem Klimov films, it has a somewhat bizzare, surreal quality to it. "Our Own", a story about Soviet partisans in Byelorussia or Ukraine in WWII, sort of a mixture of drama and combat, but a good flick in any case. "Voyna" (Literally "War") this is not WWII, it's based loosely on the Chechnya conflict, but is a great action flick nevertheless, and is subtitled. Last but not least I would recommend a film that is not Russian (actually it's Finnish), but is based on the Russo-Finnish "winter war" of 1939-40, "Talvisota" (Winter War), this flick probably has some of the best combat scenes of anything I've ever seen, and it has English subtitles as well, originally released on VHS tape, it was a rather poor transfer in terms of video quality, but I understand it is now available digitally re-mastered on DVD. One thing I want to caution people about Russian cinema, in many ways it can be crude by western standards, but if you overlook the technical flaws and consider the context of the historical time and settings, I think many people will enjoy it

i was able to watch Talvisota on Youtube last night. Aside from the subtitles which didn't make a lot of sense, it was nicely done. Good combat scenes, realistically done (as far as i can tell, having never been in combat). I liked the Polikarpovs and Tupolevs too. :)

Just picked up the legit studio authorized DVD release of Talvisota from an ebay seller, and I must say the transfer was done quite well, a bit grainy perhaps but not bad at all. I once owned the VHS version of this movie and the video quality was quite poor to say the least, so it was really nice to get a good transfer on DVD. This is why I always encourage people to get the legitimate releases of these foreign war movies, they cost more but the video quality on the bootleg disks almost always suffers due to the compression that has to be used to cram 6 or 7 Gigabytes of video stream onto a DVD-R that has a maximum burned capacity of about 4.5 gigs.

I assume you must be referring to the Tali-Ihantala flick...?? The winter war (Talvisota) took place 1939-40 and lend lease wasn't even a gleam in Stalin's eye at the time, so I doubt the Russians had any spam on board their tanks...?? I dunno, I just watched my new Talvisota DVD from beginning to end and I don't recall seeing any spam, but I have a copy of Tali-Ihantala on the way from an ebay seller in Finland, so I'll keep an eye out for the canned wonder..
