Re: 1/18 Ho-229 Full Build Input NEEDED !!
Hey Guys,
Here is a update.
All the landing gear is done and has been finished painted.
Cockpits finished
Engine cones ready for final paint
Wings and body , 2 coats primer and hopefully the last of the touch up before final paint.
Ready for first primer coating.
Flaps/ailerons
Antennas
Front wheel doors
Cannons
Canopies
After these initial full builds I will offer the kit only .
I have a few Johnny Come Latelys who have ordered the kits . When those are filled I am seriously considering retiring the Horten.
There has been way to much time and effort that has gone into this project and everything else has been stalled.
I have learned some VALUABLE LESSONS from this project and I will not repeat them in the future.
Thanks to all of you who have participated in this project.
If I do not have any interruptions with my real job, I do think that in 2 weeks this long arduous project may be a wrap.
Let us see how that goes.
Matthew

Matt,
You will never know how much we all appreciate the work and effort you have put into this kit. It will be legendary among 1:18 collectors!

Pickel,
That is amazing for a company with only ONE employee. You went from concept, to design
and then to production in a year. Far quicker than any other 1:18 company!
This Horten 229 is is a fantastic kit which goes together very easily and the detail on the model is
in credible.
As with the rest of your customs, this 229 is helping to keep 1:18 alive!
Matthew you should be very proud of yourself.
Well done my friend!!!

Re: 1/18 Ho-229 Full Build Update !!
Work progresses !!
Almost ALL of the small parts are done with final paint !!!
Next to do is the final sand and prime . Hopefully I will start the final exterior paint this week.
I need to build a stand to place the painted bodies/wings on. More time spent
I talked to Zelda last night. He wants me to glue all of his landing gear doors closed because he may put his on a stand or keep it flying. And for me to keep the gear.
THANKS !!!!!
Does anybody else want me to button all of the gear doors permanently as well ?
Please let me know ASAP !!!

Re: 1/18 Ho-229 Update !! More Input NEEDED On Gear Doors !
I took the weekend off for Mothers Day.
I sure needed that break off of the Horten.
When ever I think that I am ready for final paint I see an imperfection. So I hope to be finished with the wings ready for paint tomorrow.
I hope I am ready for my last inspection of the main body as well.
ALL OF THE SMALL PARTS HAVE THEIR FINALL COAT READY TO BE ATTACHED ONCE FINAL PAINT IS DONE.
I would NEVER have thought that this project would have taken this long to do.
A lot of my buddies more wiser than me told me it was going to be this way.
But I did not listen
I am really, really, really hoping on having final paint done this week.

Re: 1/18 Ho-229 Update !!!!!!
As a general rule I usually charge 3x the cost of the kit to do a full build including paint, weathering, detailing and all. So this full build from Mathew is an amazing value, though I decided to build my own I appreciate him doing it so cheap allowing many people to own an amazing model like this.

Re: 1/18 Ho-229 Update !!!!!!
Well,
Hopefully today I have the last of the touch ups done.
Weather permitting final paint will start tomorrow !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am guessing it will take about 2 weeks to paint . One day per paint step.
Final paint steps.
Day 1- Interior
Day 2- Pre-shade
Day 3- Bottom sky
Day 4- Top light green
Day 5 Another day for the light green to dry
Day-6 Dark green
Day 7 Another day for paint to set
Day 8- Decals
Day 9 Final assembly
Day 10 Packaging
Day 11 Ship
I WILL START THE 251 ONCE THE PAINTING HAS STARTED.
I NEED TO BRING IN REVENUE .
I have spent over $350 for paint and supplies for the full builds. I have worked on the full builds now a solid 3 weeks.
It is official I would have made more money working at Mc Donalds than the Horten full builds.
I am so ready for this project to finalize.
I am so over the Horten that I doubt that I even will even make one for myself.
Hopefully today I have the last of the touch ups done.

Hope that isn't true, Matthew.
I know you have put a ton into this project, and hope that you will feel a bit differently about it when it is finally done.
You should be very proud of this, and think that you will have fonder memories when you look back on it.
Hang in there!

light green and dark green? The paint scheme pic looks like it is green and black (or dark grey). is it green and light green?

Having worked at McDonald's and built a Horten as well, I would still take the Horten hands down!pickelhaube wrote: It is official I would have made more money working at Mc Donalds than the Horten full builds.

I am not sure of the RLM colors ( it is on the jars ) but yes it is a 2 tone green.
I am doing the same colors as the 21st Stuka.
I am using Model Masters paint.

I forgot about the gloss coat before decaling.
Dull coat after the decaling
Post shading .
I am not sure if I will weather . After the final look and see.
if I do weather add another day for another coat of dull.
So there is the potential of adding another 5 days

Quick question:
About how many jars of each color does it take to properly do the upper camo on each plane?

Re: 1/18 Ho-229 Update !! Final Paint Starting Tomorrow !!!
Thanks for keeping us posted and very glad to hear that will be the 2-tone green color combination! The picture you had been posting with the 2-tone gray did look cool, but I like the 2-tone green better. Its closer to what one sees in the majority of the depictions of the HO-229 fighter and more indicative of the late war cammo schemes used by the Luftwaffe when it became more important to make an aircraft less visible on the ground than in the air.pickelhaube wrote:I am not sure of the RLM colors ( it is on the jars ) but yes it is a 2 tone green.

I have 10 full builds 2 of them in primer paint only.
So I have 8 to paint.
I have
12 bottles sky
12 bottles of light green
12 bottles of dark green
4 bottles black
4 bottles white.
I hope that it will be enough. If I am short it will probably be the sky.

You should have just taken the Stuka to home depot and got a gallon of each color and saved a fortunepickelhaube wrote:I am not sure of the RLM colors ( it is on the jars ) but yes it is a 2 tone green.

You have no idea what I went through trying to have the colors made via automotive sources .
All dead ends. The HD paint was not an option . It works on smaller stuff but I feel that it could have been a catastrophe on such a large project .
I also wanted to use Tamiya but could not buy it in volume . The Tamiya sources are still crazy after the tsunami as well as some packaging humbug.
So Model Masters it is .
Believe me there was nothing humorous about getting the paint or this project.
Actually there was nothing humorous about this whole project except the mould flying across the yard while the roto mould was in R and D.
That was funny.
Good thing the mould was not hurt.

Im very sorry it has been such a pain, I know it may be to late to help but Sherwin Williams paint store can color match using oil base paint by the gallon. They have done it for me before and it airbrushed on great.

How would you go about thinning that for airbrush use? Household paint seems so thick compared to the hobby variety.
