1:18 BBI Black Hawk / Pave Hawk skis
Hello everybody,
Who knows the exact dimensions of UH-60 snow skis? I want to make them to get more realistic outdoor pictures this winter. But infering the size from pictures with comparison between the doors (for example) and the skis gives different results, probably depending on camera focus.
Can somebody helps (ideally working at Alaska-ANG) ?
Thanks,

Ehmm, I don't think that any UH-60s actually use any types of skids at all.

Re: 1:18 BBI Black Hawk / Pave Hawk skis
Did you ever find these skis or any skis for pave hawks/black hawks?

To Webster14:
Because I've never seen any 1/18 custom kit of these skis, I will now try to make them by myself. Not easy: I could'nt find till now the exact size, but collected some pics that should help and will try with ply wood. I have other projects, like the cockpit upper panel, throttle stick... But if there is anough interested guys, perhaps could Pickelhaube make something better. I don't know if it make sense to launch a poll without asking him before. So, if somebody has any excellent idea...

I was trying to get some info from my brotherinlaw but he works on Apaches and I guess they've never had occasion to use em on those birds. Anywho, you should use thin plastic (like for sale signs) instead of plywood I think the pavehawk would look great with the skids.

I want skis.
ph you never make modern stuff anymore we need something... what ever happened to the humvee bumpers?

Re: 1:18 BBI Black Hawk / Pave Hawk skis
On one hand, we need more people than 3-4 guys to motivate Pickelhaube. Contact your friends. On the other hand, the skis seems to be "simple" to mold, one mold for both left and right main skis, one for the small wheels supports, one for the rear ski and one for the 3 small wheels + a few holes & axes. I have now quite exact sketches (I think) made after picks. The rear ski is the most difficult to make with my only wood experience, it is thin and profiled like a spoon. But probably no problem for a resin specialist. As I can see, Pickelhaube has so much orders and projects, if something is possible with him, we would have to hope a kit the next winter... I have a need for 2 such kits.
What do you think, Pickel?

... When I look at the limited replies for my simple BBI UH/HH-60 overhead instrument cockpit panel, it seems that a lot of people have other priorities than customizing their BBI helicopters!!!

The poll was kind of lack luster.
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=22904&hilit=humvee
The Abrams mine plow won over the HuMVEE upgrade but was not overwelming.
I would not mind doing modern stuff . My Humvee turret was a HUGE success but the add armor and bumper kit .......
But the skis I can do, but like Granch said 3-4 folks aint working.
Those Pavey and Blackies are getting up there in prices and I think some would be scared to muck them up. Causing their reduction in value.
Unless dare I say that my kits may increase their value.

Re: 1:18 BBI Black Hawk / Pave Hawk skis
Pickel,
I do indeed think your kits add value to the blackhawk/pavehawk if done well by the buyer. I would hope my pavehawk could fetch a decent bit more than the standard pavehawk (which really is only a blackhawk painted in camo). It really didn't take a whole lot of skill to make it an almost one of a kind custom model. I know others have done it so it would be a "short run" rather than one of a kind, although I bet mine is different than anyone elses. Canted tail rotor, custom .50 cals added in the main cabin on both sides, custom litter, cleared out cabin, some other details. I still want to do a jungle penetrator and add the hydraulic lines along the fuel boom as well. These only accentuate the truly fantastic pieces supplied by you though.
I only have one Pavehawk "in the box" left to customize. I'm still saving it for the DAP version or else I'd do an Alaska "ski" version and be in on the skis. I'm holding out for a DAP though (I'll keep a bug in Pickel's ear on that as long as I can).

Re: 1:18 BBI Black Hawk / Pave Hawk skis
In my thougts, the skis are totally removable, so no problem for the guys having in mind other projects like a jungle penetrator: they won't have to choose between Panama and Alaska.
In my project, skis are fixed to the main wheels with thin axles. The dampers are simple aluminium tubes with an elastic wire in it (more easy to built than a piston like damper with a built in spring). The elastic wire make it possible to vary the angle attack of the skis, that are a little bit lifted in front according to the flight direction and go horizontal when on the ground. Small head nails in the landing gear should make it possible to fix the dampers, same for the safety wires at the fuselage. But for the time now, I hav'nt realised the all thing.

Re: 1:18 BBI Black Hawk / Pave Hawk skis
Any way to get more pics or even drawings of the skis ?
That way I can see what is envolved to make them.

With a little Google - Fu here's a sketch but not an engineering drawing (no dimensions).

Does anybody have this rendition in a 1/35 scale model or other scale ?
P C here is your pavey post. It looks great !!

Re: 1:18 BBI Black Hawk / Pave Hawk skis
Picks I collected through different walk-around:
I calculate the following measures for a 1:18 modell kit (referenced to the cargo doors and wheels dimensions between the photos and my BBI UH-60, so not exact).
Main landing gear ski: 148-150 mm x 42-44 mm
Rear ski: 82 mm x 15-17 mm

Re: 1:18 BBI Black Hawk / Pave Hawk skis
Those are great pics. I think that I could work off of them. I could use the tire as a scale and should be able to get them built going off of it.
Anybody want to put a poll up for the skis or should I do it ?
My guess would be about $20-$30 for a unfinished set
Unpainted or assembled .

Wow you need to cram every one of your mods for the black hawk on to one! Call it the PH Pimphawk!

Re: 1:18 BBI Black Hawk / Pave Hawk skis
Well, I'm still on for 2 kits, but don't know how to launch a poll. Pickelhaube, I think you'll find my measures nearly correct if you take the BBI wheel as a scale and the picks to calculate how big these skis are.
I found the following measures for the 1:18 modell:
- Main skis between 5" 13/16 and 5" 7/8 length for 1" 5/8 - 1" 3/4 width
- Rear ski 3" 1/4 x 9/16 to 11/16.
Because I could'nt make any trial until now, I can't give more precision. It seems that the rear ski is more broad (11/16), but, because of its profile, the optic impression on in flight pictures is very different, depending on the angle of view. I didn't calculate the proportion of the skis to the overall fuselage length, because I didn't find any picture taken exactly from the side and the front of the heli. If one of you has such a picture, I'm very interested to see it.
