Those are the Galoob Battle Squads line and they date from 1997. At that time, Galoob, which we might better remember as producing the famous "Micro Machines" line in the 80s and 90s, was going under as it couldn't compete with toy giants like Hasbro. Galoob was a family owned company based near San Francisco, California. They actually had very good customer service and you could order products directly from the company! The Battle Squads line was one of the last things they released. It was really timmed wrong, as the interest in small scale military toys hadn't quite set in at that point (remember 1997 was only when 21st started to make a name for itself). Its really too bad as had the company survived another 3-4 years, that line would probably have done much better!

The vhehicles are approxiamtely 1:64 scale, though some of the vheicles are a little too large or too small (you can see that in the picture on the ebay auction.) They had a whole host of WWII, Viet Nam, and Modern vehicles and figures. It was sort of a realistic military counterpart to their famous (and very highly detailed) Star Wars Action Fleet line. There were also some 1:16 scale figures made.

There was alot of functionality. Aircraft had opening cockpits and retractable landing gear. The modern planes, and all the tanks had spring-loaded firing missiles; the WWII planes had droping bombs. The tanks, further, had opening hatches and engines, rotating turrets, but not rolling treads. Each vehicle came with two figures. The line was found at TRU and Target, but ultimately didn't sell well - I though their products were some of the best at the time, however!

To the best of my recollection, here's what was offered in the way of the 1:64 scale products:

P-51D
FW-190D9
Sherman Tank
Tiger Tank
Kubelwagon (came with small playset that had a bunker)
Jeep (came with small palyset that had an AA gun)
F-4 Phantom
MiG-19
A-10 Thunderbolt
AH-64 Apache
AAVP
Merkava
C-130 (came with a Jeep on a palat with parachute)
Navy SEAL assult raft (came with small payset that had a dock)
Ferret Armored Car (came with Hawk missile trailer)
Platoon 1 (set of 8 green soldiers)
Platoon 2 (set of 8 gray soldiers)

I think thats all that came in the 1:64 area of the line. Surprisingly, these do not show up on ebay as often as other Galoob products seem to, and they don't go for too terribly much, either. I don't know that much about the 1:16 figures, they are rare, and came with some sort of Hummer vehicle, but all in all, are not as cool as GI Joe or especially Ultimate Soldier figures.

Save for the 1:16 stuff, I have all the 1:64 vehicles save the Merkava, the Sherman, and the Jeep with the AA gun. Kind of wish I got the Merkava, however! I thought the world of these things when they came out and especially liked the WWII planes. Who would have thought - a P-51 in which you could correctly open the canopy and take out the pilot figure?

The C-130 is simply awesome, being more or less correctly scaled and having an opening cockpit/passenger compartment as well as space to hold 3 small vehicles. Then there's the Jeep with parachute, missile launchers, the swiveling cannoon, and the rotating props.
