21st's "OLD CROW"
21st's "OLD CROW"
I was just looking at the Military Toy Shop and noticed that they have 21st C's "OLD CROW" up for pre-order. I'm just curious as to why would 21st do OC when the bbi version has been out for a while now.. Granted it is a slightly differant paint version, but I would think that it would have been wiser to use a plane that has not been done at all "Frenesi", or "Glamorous Glenn III" come to mind as viable options of 357th aircraft, and there are many others from other squadrons as well as many from the 357th that have not been represented.

Well maybe its because 21st's Old Crow has the NMF scheme which Buds Old Crow was famous for and 2 this version of Old Crow is gonna beat the crap out of the BBI version both for looks and accuracy. I cant wait to get my hands on one.

I've ordered one from boardmember & small retailer Raiderad6, as he had gotten some in-stock. I should have it within a few days and will post a picture, unless someone beats me to it! I'm excited about this particular Mustang scheme. While not as flashy as "Petie 2nd" or "Big Beautiful Doll" it is Bud Anderson's plane and my favorite version of it

I'm probably the lone voice on this one but the last thing i need is a 15th Mustang repaint! I think 21st has about beat this mold to death. I'm all for repaints but there comes a point when enough is enough. Give me a new bird and I'll buy repaints of it, but I dont have the room or patience for more of the same
I still luvya 21st, just bring out the new birds and figs instead!

I happen to like the Old Crow scheme, but I will certainly agree with the above comments that the P-51 is being beaten to death in 1:18. I mean, baring the handpainted 21c Mustang, the few "Tender Terrors," and the few BBI RAAF P-51s, we've gotten quite a few P-51Ds at retail over the last 7 years:
21c original P-51:
Lou IV
Blue nose (forgot the noseart name)
Big Beautiful Doll
BBI P-51:
Killer
Hurry Home Honey
Cripes 'a Mighty
Old Crow
Donald Duck
RAAF S1
RAAF S2
21c retooled P-51:
Ridgerunner
Flying Undertaker
Petie 2nd
Big Beautiful Doll
Old Crow
Bunnie (Tuskeegee)
When especially the 21c retooled and BBI P-51s are taken into account, that leaves us with a ton to choose from. Ah, well, I still love the P-51

Please tell me 21st didnt do that. If they did then forget it. I will get BBD only then and call it quits on the Mustang. Old Crow should be on both sides of the cowling.

MUSTANGS
Yea Tman, also forgetting the 2 Aussie Mustangs. I believe bbi is up to S7 already.
As for the new 21C Old Crow you have to wonder if there is a conspiracy in China. How the F_ do they make the same mistake as bbi? Especially with hindsight? That is shameful frankly. Goes to show both companies should relax with churning out P-51s and focus elsewhere for a while..

For once digger I agree with you and that dont happen all to often lol! I really looked forward to this version of Old Crow but I'm gonna pass and close my Mustang collection out with BBD. After all I have 2 Mustangs that represent the 357th and thats TT and Hurry Home Honey. Thats good enough for me. So this weekend it looks like BBD will be it as far as Mustangs go. Its sad that the same mistake was made by 21st with Old Crow. You would have thought they would have learned by BBI's mistake. Speaking of BBI wheres the Hellcat?

Old Crow ?
You can always buy an "Old Crow" Vexillarious decal .
....... "BadCat" has them for $5.00 total shipping.
.......... I was kinda' lucky I guess ,.. I bought my BBi "Old Crow" MIB from "Der Vogalfanger" w/ decal as a bonus. $50.00 total shipping too. I thought that was "one helluva' deal".
>>> Besides ,.. I prefer it in OD. I like the BBi version alot better anyway. They're both historically accurate aeroplanes.

Well MG you are right. I guess I can always get the Old Crow decal from Bad Cat and fix the problem. From the reports I've been getting about BBD I think I'll stick with Old Crow.MG-42 wrote:You can always buy an "Old Crow" Vexillarious decal ........ "BadCat" has them for $5.00 total shipping.

TMan great list. The blue nose is the Laura Michele . Lets see. I am missing the Hurry H Honey and the Donald Duck from BBI and the New B B Doll and Old Crow from 21st. If I get these I will have every P-51 made !!!!!!!!tmanthegreat wrote:I happen to like the Old Crow scheme, but I will certainly agree with the above comments that the P-51 is being beaten to death in 1:18. I personally prefer Big Beautiful Blonde over the Old Crow and my favorite would be the Tuskegee Mustang. The paint scheme looks great on the Tuskegee and the action figure is amazing. I think 21st did a great job on this one, i think it would have been cool to have different p51 from the Tuskegee squadron.

Still waiting for B/C models before spending more on P-51's
There are so many versions of the B/C paint schemes that they could produce at least a half-dozen really interesting planes - just for starter's, here's some (and all were Aces) that look really neat:
Howard's "Ding Hao"
Tex Hill's 23rd FG shark-toothed version (he's still alive, by the way)
Don Gentile's "Shangri La"
Bochkay's "Short Fuse Sallee"
Kinnard's "Man O War"
Goehausen's "Miss Mimi"

I am certainly surprised that we haven't seen a B/C model Mustang yet. Seeing how the Mustang is considered instantly recognizeable and the most popular American warbird, I would have thought that one of the 3 companies would be chomping at the bit to make and sell a ton of these.
Anyways, Flytiger, I like your list. You've got three of my favorite ones there: Short Fuse Sallee, Ding Hao, and Shangri-La

Still, something tells me we may get one from 21c at some point in the future...

I would be very surprised to see a B/C mustang from 21st. but I would all over that one if any one made it.

I got my "Old Crow" Mustang today, and must say that I have a new favorite 1:18 scale P-51
My example had no serious QC issues and no serious paint flaws or scratches! Sort of a turn-around for me regarding 21c products, and most appreciated! The straight props make all the difference. The figure and bombs (not pictured) are the same as with all the other 21c retooled P-51s. Here are a few quick pics of "Old Crow":

Even with the missing nose art, I think the plane still looks great! I like the checkered cowling and the painted invasion stripes (even below the wings) are a plus. While I'll still hold that Big Beautiful Doll has the best paintjob of any large-scale production run 21c Mustang, this comes a close second in my book

It is a nice looking Mustang to be sure. However, I can't believe the noseart SNAFU happened again with another company no less. I'm sure 21st isn't to happy about it either.
As for buying and applying a decal, If I wanted to put decals on my aircraft I'd buy some model kits. I was really looking forward to a proper Crow.

You never know... My "Old Crow" doesn't have the swastikas applied to the kill markings, whereas they were applied to the markings on "Petie 2nd" which was a small retailer exclusive release. That may signal an eventual Wal Mart release, or just a research error

Old Crow is the P-51 I always wanted to get because I love its NMF look. BBI's Old Crow aint bad but I hate the color scheme. I also have always wanted BBD but the reports coming back aint good. It seems like there is paint smudges ect. This Thursday I'm going to Historic Aviation to pick one up but before I plunk down the cash for it trust me I will be looking it over very well.
