Mustang air racer

Post by Sabrefan » Mon Aug 14, 2006 12:15 pm

Has anyone tried to make a 1:18th scale P-51 into an air racer? I just started to modify one. So far I have removed the guns, and I think I might try other modifications. Any ideas?

It's been a long road, but I am still in the game. :)

Are you planning mods like Miss America or Dago Red/Strega?

The thought has crossed my mind but not my work bench, yet. ;)

Air Racers

Yes, I'm in the process of a P-51 and a Corsair racer conversion. Both will be entirely fictitious paint schemes, but based upon the 1947 Cleveland Air Races.

I've been working on the Corsair a long time. Not that hard of a job, just finding the time to finish them is the main challenge.

Jim,

I am doing my Mustang the same way you are doing yours. I want it to be a Mustang that has just been put up as suplus. I won't modify it to much, just take off the military additions.

Racers

Yes, I've "demilitarized" both my Corsair and the Mustang. The Corsair started life as a a 21C Brit Corsair and the Mustang was a recent 21C addition (Ridge Runner) bought at WM just to give my Corsair a competitor. I did chop of some wingtip length of the Corsair, as some did.

They both are awaiting paint and custom decals. I just work on them a bit at a time; with sometimes a month or two passing between work on them. I've designed purely fictional paint schemes for both. As much as I like to stay historic for the military aircraft, I figured I could use some 'artistic license' on these just for the fun of it!

Here's a link to a list of Unlimited Class airplanes showing quite a selection of Corsairs and Mustangs:

Good luck and I hope we both can post some photos of our racers soon!
