I think its to scale. The cockpit doors open on the wrong side, however!

it's to scale; the Apache is a big bird. Most helicopters are pretty large.

Tman I'm still trying to figure out how they made a mistake like that. The Apache is a huge bird. Sitting in the cockpit feels kinda like sitting on top of a ladder.

apache doors

Post by MiG29K » Sun Apr 09, 2006 8:12 pm

That was the first thing I noticed about the Apache...the damned doors. I was reluctant to pick one up because that drove me nuts. I'm now reconsidering and thinking maybe I'll just glue the doors shut and make them open from the right instead...

DIMENSIONS:
Length 58.26 ft (17.76 m) with rotors turning
48.17 ft (14.68 m) ignoring rotors
Rotor Diameter 48.00 ft (14.63 m)
Height 14.13 ft (4.30 m) to top of tail rotor
12.89 ft (3.84 m) to top of main rotor
16.25 ft (4.95 m) to top of radome

I do aggree the BBI model looks big....tomd

but if you put it next to the BBI blackhawk they are about the same length.

Agreed..unless someone has a dimension they question it is unwise to go by "the eye." Someone made that mistake with the bbi M1 which is to scale (ie HUGE) and can be mistaken for TOO big. You can see the 1:18 version should be almost 3 ft. long without the blades...so take that into account.

this situation has come up a few times in the past, people thinking the Apache is too big to be 1/18 scale. The real Apache is deceptively large, in that it's bigger than it looks (in real life).

Other aircraft like that are the F-117 (which looks like a small sport plane sized aircraft but is actually huge) and the end of war Japanese Shinden pusher fighter (which again looks like a small plane but is actually the size of a Corsair).
