A KingTiger Too !

Post by MG-42 » Fri Mar 17, 2006 4:06 am

A KingTiger is already in the works as we speak. Release should be by next year,...early as Spring. Another "wait and see" on the actual release date. "As for it having a Porsche turret",....I would'nt count on it. If it did,...it would be an instant classic. These KT's fitted with Porsche turrets were "shot-traps" anyway. That's why so little of these were produced,..only 50,..and replaced by the new and popular Henschel turret which was an overall improvement.

As for the turrets, yep knew that though the Porche one still as you said is an Instant Hit,must be due to the limited number done.

Zimmerit

Post by flpickupman » Fri Mar 17, 2006 5:19 am

Ask and ye shall receive.

Problemchild has overcome the lack of Zimmerit with a very expedient solution. Scroll down to the bottom of the thread.

That or if we can get him to slide it over to the Customs thread in the Reference Room. That would work too.

Wittmans Last Tiger !

Post by MG-42 » Fri Mar 17, 2006 7:51 am

Assumed,...by Hawker-Typhoons,....but actually,..by Sherman "Fireflys". Wittman was only 30-years old when he lost his life. His crew were alot younger.

Last Battle

Post by flpickupman » Fri Mar 17, 2006 8:35 am

This is from the previously posted website Panzerace.net. It details his last engagement, and discusses the units that claim to have destroyed Wittmann's Tiger.

To think what COULD have happened IF Wittmann had taken up Panzer Training instructer instead of front line fighting.
Could have found a few more Wittmann types later in the war, though NOT like the Heer,Waffen SS & Luftwaffa didn`t have there own Tank Aces anyway.

You think they had him pegged as a King Tiger commander for when they were going to come out?

Actually, it would have been interesting to see Wittmann in a Jagdtiger based on his Stug experience. He could have reached a long way with that 128mm.

Otto Carius is still around and had more kills than Wittmann, but I don't see him at many cons.

and ran the "Tiger Apothecary" no less! He didn't care for the JagdTiger he got stuck with towards the end of the war; too problematic and cumbersome.

i find it interesting the mystique surrounding Whittmann. There were tank aces with more kills (eg Otto Carius, as mentioned by ToyFed) and his politcial views were less than appealing (he was an ardent nazi supporter) but all that seems to be 'forgotten' in the lore of his wartime stories. I guess a lot of it has to do with the way he died, fighting the classically romantic 'hopeless battle against overwhelming odds'.

Also interesting how the dispute over 'who got him' parallels the dispute over who got the Red Baron....everybody wants credit for bagging the enemy's superstar.

I doubt the russians romanticized him so. If they'd caught him they probably would have thrown him in prison for 10+ years for 'sabotaging the russian war industry'...many very high scoring german fighter aces had similar sentences hanging over their heads had they been captured by the soviets.

There is no guarantee Whittmann would have been a good instructor. A lot of what he did may have been instinct and 'feel' and even dumb luck. All hard to teach. Plus, he just may have been a lousy instructor. Alot of 'aces' or superstars are..they can't communicate well and are impatient with those of 'lesser ability'.

Still, this Whittman tiger will probably be a must have, even if it's just because there will finally be a tiger with a decent three color paint job (the old 3 color tiger looks like a five year old painted it with a 10 cent paint brush).
