1/18th Scale WACO Glider

I was talking to another collector about the WACO glider the other day and he was saying how long the wingspan would be in 1/18th scale.

It would be a wapping 55.77 inches long ( WINGSPAN )

Years ago I was talking to the Hun about the same thing .

This would be as big as an average .40 sized r/c airplane .

At almost a 5 foot wingspan there is no way the average collector could dispay it unless the collector lived and breathed D-Day .

Unless ......

Yes, definitely there are some 1/18 scale beauties that only will live in our dreams unless that we have a huge house

By the way, easier to make, because no engine, no retractable gear, no sophisticated instrument panels... did she had foldable wings?

I don't recall the CG-4A as having foldable wings. Despite having large vehicles, the 1/6 scale people regret not being able to have planes in their hobby and they would be way bigger. Even a fighter plane would be over 6' in wingspan. The T-6 model we have hanging in our Museum has a 7' wingspan representing 42' in 1/6 scale.

I built the Italeri 1:72 scale kit a number of years ago, actually on a commission by a former WWII veteran who was himself a glider pilot. It is still on display at a local military museum

This would be the sort of vehicle that would be fun to load up with troops and cargo. Heck, if PH made it out of lightweight foam, we could have a real glider!

There is a 1/18th scale Waco Glider on display at the New England Air Museum in Windsor Locks, CT. Maybe someone has a picture of it?

Well, I said it would be more simple to make than any other plane, no engine, few nav instruments, but browsing on Google for inside pictures, it seems much more complicated than I thought, a lot of tubes, wires, especially in the opening nose

I found some Jerry Bates plans for a 1/13.5 flying model of the Waco Glider and gave some consideration to scale it down to 1/18. It could be done, with balsa parts cut from the plans and covered with heat shrink fabric. It would be hard to duplicate detail and I'm not a scale builder. I'm not sure how it would look next to my "out of the box" aircraft. I'll put in on my growing "wish list" , right next to my "wish list" C-47. B-25,
Hurricane ......etc.
