After the fall of France in June 1940, the Germans made the French paint white stripes along the sides of their planes so they could be readily identified. Later, this was changed to painting the tail and, often, the engine cowlings yellow and finally, red stripes were added----except in Syria. So the poor Vichy airmen had to fly into combat against the Allied "Operation Torch" landings in the most absurd looking----but rather pretty----schemes. Here are some examples:
