Time for a new sightings system?

Post by parrish333 » Sun Aug 21, 2005 8:18 am

Perhaps this has been proposed before, but I would love it if this board would adopt a sightings system similar to the following:

http://www.joesightings.com/Sightings.php?JoeId=413

Individual users can enter what they found, where they found it (retail or online), when they found it, and at what price.

All of the commentary done in conjunction with the sightings makes it a bit difficult to get a nice overview of what is where without reading dozens of posts.

I would find it tremendously helpful!

Thoughts? Please share!

so basically it means separating the 'finds and discussion' thread into a 'finds' thread and a 'discussion' thread.

It will mean twice the number of sticky threads at the top of the board then. Many people already don't like the number of sticky threads we have at times. It will also mean people will inevitably be posting their finds in the discussion thread and posting discussion in the finds thread..

Opinions?

Clarification...

Post by parrish333 » Sun Aug 21, 2005 8:36 am

Just to clarify, I would hope that discussion COULDN'T be mixed in with the findings. If you look at the link to the joesightings site, when you record your findings it just adds the data to a table; there is nowhere to post discussion.

But perhaps the message board environ would not support this type of functionality and it could only exist outside of this board's space.

So maybe there is no ideal solution, but was just hoping for something more streamlined or efficient :)

Invariably a siting turns into a discussion.

"Hey, I found X at Y! They had 2 more on the shelf. Wow what a Z!!!! I mean, you can xxxx the xxxx's and the detailing is awesome! Boy, xxxxxx did a great job releasing this xxxxxx. " I think you get the point.

There will never be an ideal solution to this problem IMHO. Andrew's been here longer than I have and he's right about the post-its. In the past they got out of hand. Now maybe we could have a seperate catagory altogether with nothing but siting post-its. Is it worth it though? I dunno. With the On-Line folks fully involved with our hobby, you can pretty much mail-order anything you need at will, something that was not available to the folks visiting GPXD's forum in 2000!!

Oh well, never mind :)

Well, the overwhelming lack of positive response tells me I'm the only one who thought such a thing would be useful. I guess there's few of us left who do most of our shopping solely in retail locations. Or maybe nobody else minds reading through all of the commentary versus just having a quick table to peruse to see where items are popping up.

So, oh well, never mind my silly idea :)
