Old WWII Movies

Post by Dauntless » Tue Feb 22, 2011 3:56 pm

So I was watching an old war movie called The Bridge at Remagen 1969. First time I'd ever seen it. I'm not that knowledgeable about a lot of military armor, but I couldn't find one thing wrong here. Usually you'll see some Patton Tanks or something else from a later time like The battle of the Bulge etc..

The American tanks were M-18 Hellcats though and there were some German Halftracks, all kinds of cool hardware, misc. cars and trucks German motorcycles. I think they even had some what looked like German 88's.

There was even a scene with a B-25 and a P-51 when the US tried to bomb it.

Not only was it fairly authentic as far as I could tell (maybe some experts here could find something wrong) but the story was very well told, and good acting as well from both points of view. Portraying the Germans too and their human side.

This is going on my list of favorite WWII movies. It's so good I'm going to have to watch it again just to get a closer look at all the cool hardware.

The The Bridge at Remagen is one of my favorites too, but those are M24 Chaffe tanks.

Stand corrected. Not quite up on my armor identification. The M-24 Chaffee is a nice looking little tank. I thought the tanks in the movie were kinda small.
I think I have a couple of 1:32 ones in the garage, though I can't find them listed in the SSHQ database.

The opening shot with the M24 s racing throught he villages and along the river road to reach the bridge is my favorite. I crank the volume to hear the sound of the tracks and the roar of the engine. and finally the sound of the firefight just before the bridge blows.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_World_War_II_films

Two I haven't seen in years but are on the top of my list.....
1945 A Walk in the Sun its about the invasion of Salerno.

1951 Decision Before Dawn US Army uses German POW's as Spies. This movie has plenty of original equipment.....uniforms, weapons and vehicles. Unfortunately most of the German tanks are US.

Is that the very one halftrack in the film?

Thanks for the war movies link normandy.

I saw "49th Parallel" not too long ago. An excellent WWII film. It all takes place in Canada of course.
