F-14 Tomcat OOOHHH AAAHHH!

Post by Folkwulfe » Tue May 11, 2010 11:36 am

Just received my replacement metal landing gear from Skyworks for the JSI Tomcat. All I can say is OOOOOHHHH....AAAAHHHHH! The gear is fantastic and three times the detail of the original gear. All the plumbing lines for the hydrolic brakes is present as is the lower drag brace (more on that). There are two flavors you can order.....the pre-built version that comes assembled and painted...and the "raw" version you build and paint yourself. I bought the raw version and, unfortunately, one of the lower drag braces was missing. A quick call to MTS and they noticed that ALL of the un-built kits seem to be missing one drag brace. They promise a quick resolution...and I believe they will. In the meantime, I can work on one of the legs and give you pictures. There are NO instructions for assembly, painting, or mounting. One note.....these legs are for static down display only. The gear leg neither rotates or extends to fit into the gear well. One of the mods for the D Bombcat may be a way to quick disconnect these metal legs for in-flight display as well. Film at eleven!

While the video is useful, it shows mounting of the pre-assembled versions of the gear....not the raw. When you see the parts and work left, you'll understand. None of the pin holes are drilled, there is a minor mold seperation line on both legs, and a little flash. No big deal. This will be a running lesson on the raw gear from box open to gear attachment.
