Custom painted SS figures.

Post by hotrodrock » Mon Mar 02, 2009 5:58 pm

These are a couple of the 1/32 Conte SS figures that I painted in Spring cammo. They are the soft plastic ones that come molded in all grey. Also have a squad I painted in Fall cammo.

I used both. Humbrol enamels and Tamiya acrylics. Here is the funny thing. I read these how to books on how to get flesh color. Most of the experts mix several different colors together. I use the little bottles of Testors enamel, yea thats right, in a color called "Wood". I use that as the base coat and its near perfect. Very hard to find.

The pants are painted. Would have to look to see what the exact name of the color is. Didn't mention that I always shoot a coat of Dullcoat on them to make the colors more flat. I see lots of pics in this section that the builder keeps the glossy finish. I myself prefer a flat finish.

The Conte figures do have heavier looking legs than most other figures. I do like them though becaue they have a very wide variety of WWII figures to choose from.

A lot of folks think that it is just too time consuming to paint their own figures. Once you paint a few you learn some things that cut way down on the time. I set up 5 or 6 figures at a time. Paint all of the pants at the same time, all of the canteens at the same time, etc. Keeps you from jumping from color to color to just finish one figure at a time. When its time to put up the paints, you have 5 or 6 completed figures instead of just one. It kind of fools yourself into feeling you have acomplished more. And if you are using figures like the Airfix "multi-pose" that have all of the individual pieces attached to sprue trees, its really easy to paint all of the peices before assembly. If you are just a casual modeler, you don't have to put 4 or 5 different colors on the face of your soldier. A simple base coat with a little shading will give you a pretty good figure.
