Stuka tankbuster mod

Post by olifant » Wed Jun 11, 2008 9:53 pm

Has anyone here done a Stuka tankbuster mod with the 37MM cannons? I know the model is wrong, but I don't think it would be too bad. I would love to hear about it before I rush off and attempt this.

Thanks

i've been tempted for years but have never gotten around to it yet. I just don't know if i'd be happy with a B model stuka representing a G.

I was going to use two P-47 drop tanks for the basis of the pod/breach portions of the 37mm cannons. They are a bit big but overall a good shape and a good place to start.

With some effort the B could be converted to a G....the biggest stumbling block for me is the canopy; the other mods i think i could do.

There are a few things:
1. Canopy as Aferguson has said.
2. The chin scoop is smaller more steam lined.
2. Wheel spats are a little different.
3. Twin MGs in the obsevers position.
4. Stab brace is different.
The major diff is the canopy and chin scoop. Chin scoop is a moderate fix. But the major hurdle would be the canopy. The B is taller and squarish and the D is rounder on top and slopes to the back. Unless you have a vacume former it will be a VERY difficult task to take on. The B canot be modified to a G. I HAVE LOOKED AT THIS CUSTOM FOR SOME TIME. But now I have a vacuformer and it is back on the list for things to do.
It would be a cool custom.
Kirk Douglas : Mine hit the ground first
John Wayne : Mine was taller

wingtips are also longer and more slender. Numerous other smaller differences but as PH said all that REALLY needs to be done is the nose scoops and the canopy; and the wing cannon of course.

There was a 1/16 scale r/c stuka D made a few years ago by Flying Styro. I tried to order a 'replacement' canopy from them but they had just gone out of production and was unable to. I think a 1/16 canopy would have looked ok, especially if i trimmed the bottom of it a bit. Alas, it was not to be...

I am not such a rivet counter that I would worry about the A/G dissimilarities. I think I could live with just mounting the cannons on the existing model. I am not the most skilled modeler here....

well then, get yourself a Rudel stuka and go for it. Or, i've always thought the winter stuka would look nice with the big under wing cannon on it.
