Donald Duck P-51

Post by Coreyeagle48 » Wed Feb 20, 2008 9:51 pm

Greetings:

Just bought one of these on sale at Target.com and it came a few days ago. I must say I am impressed with this airplane and so were my fifth graders. It made the trip with me to school today so I could share the Mustang and the Spitfire with them. We are having a fundraiser at our school and I am presenting my photography and a little about aviation history. So I took the planes in as a preview. They liked them both.

A couple of things I really like about the Mustang. I think the silver weathered color is very well done. Really makes the plane look fantastic. I also like the detail of the model and the pilot and cockpit are fantastic. The wing and landing gear also fit really nice and tight. BBI did a pretty nice job on this airplane. I think the tires are much better than the 21st P-51 and more correct looking, just my opinion.

I got this plane for $40 shipped and I am glad. Yesterday I saw special edition P-51's at the Air and Space Museum stickered at $90. Though they were nice, I can't spend that money for every plane. I feel this model is good looking and was a great purchase.

Sorry if this is old news, it's really exciting to get back into 1/18. I forgot how impressive this scale is and how nice some of these planes present in this scale. Neat Mustang to say the least!

Greetings:

Yes I saw the P-51 BBD. It was very nice and pristine (they had one opened and on a shelf for display) but at that price, that was just too much money to dish out for that model.

They also had regular 32X planes stickered at $36 which was steep. I understand they want to make money but if people know the cost of those airplanes in general they won't buy them.

Glad you like the BBI P-51 :D The plane is a bit over-riveted when compared to the smooth surfaces on an actual Mustang, but besides that and a few other minor concerns, it really is a great plane! The solid constructions is also quite nice. It is one model that does not feel like it will fall apart in your hands

On another note, $90 for the BBD P-51 at the Air & Space Museum is extremely expensive and actually a rip off. It is at least $30 over the regular retail price at most small retailers, $50 over the regular Wal Mart price and nearly $70 over what the BBD P-51s were discounted to at Wal Mart in the fall. Special edition box or not, great XD plane or not, $90 is way too steep for the 21c P-51!

Still, if a tourist had never seen that plane before - and at the museum, a majority of the visitors will be in that category - they would probably get it...
