1/18 Ho-229 Project Build ( Retired ) !!

I'd be interested and if it doesn't happen, I'll just make my second 229 a single seat night-fighter.

The biggest hurdle would be the canopy. Primarily the front shield . It slopes backwards. If I made it strait up and down I could make the canopy swing up and open . Like the Me-109.

If you go for it, I'd copy the style of 21st's Me-262 night-fighter canopy.......that seems to be the way to go.

What if I do the front landing gear strut just like the 262 as well ?

I could use the main wheel to and maybe get away from that cartoonish huge front wheel.

Of course I would have to make the strut longer. That way it would be more realistic to were the front wheel will fold back.

Opinions ?

No need for a pic. There will be a wire that will go into the main tube of the strut onto the top of the tire.

This may not work I also could make a tiny triangle piece of stock and glue it behind the strut under that lower ring. The little triangle will sit tight onto the tire. This will hopefully brace the whole thing.

That is something I will have to address when I get time.



I think that I like the Me-262 main gear strut rather than a smaller wheeled version of the original main nose gear.

Opinions ?

Pickel, why not use a Dremel motor speed control with your drill.

Are you saying you would use a longer version of the nose gear and wheel from the 262?

You are keeping the original nose wheel for the regular version. Would want the regular version to be historically accurate.

The Dremel reducer is a good idea. I have had the same results with a light dimmer switch. This will work well with the overall theme of this aircraft EXPERAMENTAL

IF I DO THE NIGHTFIGHTER VERSION IT WILL HAVE THE SAME STYLE OF NOSE LANDING GEAR AS THE ME-262.

The DAYFIGHTER will have the original gear .

I went and got all of the material to make my " rotisserie " mould machine.

I hope to make it and try to pour some wings on Sunday.

This is part of the project that was very questionable and I hope it will work .

Otherwise I will have to split the wings and make moulds for the out side skin and inside shells X 2.

I also got about $70 worth of brass tubing for the wing spars.

Cross your fingers I will be going in tomorrow morning.

I was wondering about this. From the little I've read about resin casting, I was thinking the Horton's wings might present some significant challenges. It wouldn't surprise me if you end up having to do a number of experiments to find a method that works.

As you know, I've been living in a world of failed experiments for a year now . . . it can be very frustrating. Bear in mind that we're patient and trust you -- and good luck!

Pickel, some years ago I worked with a guy as mold makers for an artist.
Her work was life sized (1:1) resign figures.
Our RTV molds were gravity pour with fiberglass "jackets" reinforced
with electrical conduit tubing to act as the "mother mold'' and keep everything in place.
When the mold was ready, we'd pour resign into to it and roll, flip or what ever it took
to get an ever coat on the inside of the mold. It was a pain in the a$$ but worked every time!
The last step was to fill the rest of the sculpture with expanding foam to fill any voids.

As long as you have enough working time before the resign starts to set, you should be fine.
Your rotisserie idea sounds like a good one!

Well I have the rotisserie built.

Failure.

First time I plugged it in with my light dimmer switch it flung the wing mould about 8 feet across the room.
Look out

Well the light dimmer switch did not work so I was able to get a voltage router regulator from Harbor Freight.
It slowed it down immensely but it is still spinning too fast about 60 rpm .
WAY TOO FAST.

Ideal would be about 6 RPM.

I won/ordered a rotisserie motor off of e-bay.
They say that it will spin 40 pounds @ 2 1/4 RPM.
That is a little slow but I think it will work. Hopefully it will be here by Friday.

If you don't do the Night-Fighter version I'd go with this for the second 229.

First one may be a splinter type camo...........can't make up my mind

you could place a couple cameras around the work site and you could start your own web reality show, building all your projects and especially if you did allot of narration while building. It would be a great way to make some extra money and get your work out there. look into it http://www.justin.tv/ would be cool to watch you work!

I have been watching the most amazing program on the Ho 229 on National Geographics HD.

I mean amazing! HD video of the only remaining Ho229 and the attempt to rebuild a replica based on the original.. It is titled " Hitler's Stealth Fighter". It was shot in 2009 but somehow I missed this program. I mean this thing goes into incredible detail on the Ho229 with spectacular footage.

Not sure if it is on the net but in HD it is terrific.

I really want my Ho229 now
