Despite its absence on the <b>Minichamps</b> site, we've finally unearthed a photo of their upcoming T-72 tank. Finished in the standard homogenous green summer scheme, the engineering sample photographed in their second edition catalog sports smoke dischargers on its turret sides, twin turret-mounted headlights and a mean looking coaxial machine gun affixed to the commander's cupola. There's also a pair of spare fuel drums to the rear of the vehicle, storage bins on the back of the turret, and lots of other gear studded atop the hull deck. Presently, the T-72, like the ucpoming Centurion, are still scheduled for a fall release....<i>[posted 10/13/2006]</i><p>

Minichamps T-72
Hi All,
Just a quick update concerning the T-72. Its now en route as we speak and it'll start shipping out at the tail end of this week. The Centurion has been pushed back to a January release although we're still hoping for an actual image of the prototype vehicle to appear in their third edition catalogue.

Nothing yet. My guess is that they'll wait until February and announce future plans for the series in Nuremberg. It could be a question they're looking to add more features to their vehicles or it could be a case where more competition is forcing them to rethink the range. No doubt as more companies enter the fray, each player has to assess their fit within the marketplace. What may have worked one year may have to be adjusted accordingly, and this is true for everyone concerned.
2007 will certainly be an intriguing year for all the competitors as they continue to vie for market share in existing spaces and/or enter new regimes they think can be better served. I also think more companies will be looking to offer exclusives as a way of building brand loyalty, so long as price points are within reason vis a vis the competition.

Motorpool - thanks for the update. After I learned that Minichamps had pulled the early version oft the M-60 I feared for the fate of the T-72 and Centurion. Thank you for the positive news about the T-72. Hopefully the Centurion may make it out early next year.
I 'm hoping the Centurion when/if it emerges will be the Korean War 20 pdr version although I suspect it will probably be the later 105mm version.

Hi Graycap,
Our thinking is leaning more towards a basic Centurion Mk. IV that served with the BAOR in 1965. Minichamps has a penchant for using vehicles that are, for lack of a better phrase, Teutonic-centric, where they have a vehicle at hand to replicate instead of a tank that might be more popular. I think that's why they chose a T-72M in East German markings as opposed to a Russian version. Pretty much all the modern stuff traversed the German countryside during the Cold War era while I would venture to guess all the WWII stuff is probably on display at the Panzermuseum in Muenster or some other nearby bastion of military vehicles.
In any event, I had the chance to take one of the T-72s out of the box this morning and examine it -- without unscrewing it from its base. VERY NICE. Its a solid vehicle all around with awesome details. I didnt see any opening hatches but everything was present including rear-mounted fuel drums. I'd give it a 9 out of 10.
FYI, Minichamps decided to fly these in from the Orient rather than ship them by boat to get them here by the holidays. That said, these are going to be in short supply for the near-term until the balance shows up in January, after the holiday storm. I'll let you know what the Centurion looks like when we have an image. It sure would be nice to turn the Centurion into Israeli variants if the parts were available and our skilled customizer returned to the fold.
