I still make buildings! 1/18 Netherland Brick (Now Finished)
Been really busy in my final years of school (chem E), so haven't been modeling as much as I'd like. However, I'm home for the summer working an internship so I have time to model on weekends! Time to get some long overdue projects wrapped up now that I can unpack some of my tools.
Working on a 1/18 street display. The buildings are inspired by brick buildings in the Netherlands during Market Garden. Still needs a good bit of work, but getting there.

That's some cool stuff you are making. With 1/18 being so large, street scenes take up a lot of room. I have had an idea for a Paris street scene since my 1/35th model building days. But in 1/18 it wouldn't be portable.

Alex great looking buildings, you have mastered foam board sculpting!
At some point I'd like to try and do something like you've made...hopefully
it'll be half as good.
Here is a link that some might find interesting, to give you an idea of what it takes to make
a foam building...

I'd dabbled in foam but have had limited success. This was exactly what I needed!!

Alex, that's a darn good looking tank too! Are those custom figures? I don't see the robot articulation joints anywhere.

The tanker is a figure by Torro, I believe. Part of their 1/16 line of accessories for the RC tanks.
I don't know who makes the G.I.s, but they are also aftermarket. If you image search "1/16 Sherman crew" they also show up in several photos, on Pinterest especially.

The tank is a 1/16 FOV prebuilt. Comes with all the figures!

Hi Alex I have a question about painting the foam board...what paints do you use and what type of primer?

Well, the primer is the critical part. A good primer and you can use a lot of harsh stuff on top. Typically all my base paints will be acrylic though, so by the time I get to weathering there's enough of a layer of acrylic that my washes/streaking with oil paints don't harm it. Though I need to test and see what they do on bare foam, it may do nothing at all.
Right now it's been so long since I've touched it, I'm just going to experiment with primers again. Before when I did them I would use either PVA glue or latex house paint as a primer. I want to see if there are better options. I will also look into a good strong sealant as well. I'll be sure to post what I used when It's finished!

Alex, I just remembered artist's gesso, its used to prepare surfaces for painting....like canvas and wood.
Acrylic Gesso is thinner than paint so a few thin coats might be enough to seal the foam board while not
covering up all the detail of your brick work. It should bond to the foam and provide a good base for the
paint to stick to. Gesso may be the primer / sealant you need. You should be able to find it at most art
or craft stores.

I decided to go with the gesso. It's a very nice primer indeed!!!

Amazing! with the primer on it, it does not look like foam board.
Looking forward to seeing the rest of your progress on this. Nice job!

Very impressive, the bricks look so realistic. The roof tiles came out great and the roof
flashing on the corner building just add to the realism of these buildings.
Its coming along nicely!

WOW!! Alex Your an Artist! I had to look twice at the pics and I'm still having a hard time
believing its 1:18 and not real. Well Done Flyguy.

I really like your work. Your techniques are fantastic as well! I am going to try to replicate some of these buildings as backdrop for my armor models. Thanks for sharing this with us!
Re: I still make buildings! 1/18 Netherland Brick (Now Finis
Your work and photography are fantastic. The use of the real background sells the photo.
